Toyota announced that, effective July 17, it will offer $3,000 in conquest cash to California owners of specific electric vehicles, incentivizing them to trade in their 2020-2023 model year EVs for a Toyota bZ. This offer is exclusive to California residents, and Toyota has explicitly stated that it cannot be combined with California’s upcoming $3,500 electric vehicle purchase subsidy.

According to Toyota’s published criteria, eligible rival EVs include the Ford Mustang Mach-E, Hyundai Ioniq 5, Kia EV6, Nissan Leaf, Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, and Volkswagen ID.4—seven models in total. Owners must possess one of these vehicles and reside in California to qualify for the $3,000 cash incentive. Toyota further clarified that if an immediate family member in the same household owns a qualifying vehicle, the incentive is also applicable.

Outside California, Toyota is providing different incentives, including 0% APR financing for up to 72 months and up to $4,000 in lease cash. The $4,000 lease incentive reduces the 36-month lease payment to $349 per month, with $3,999 due at signing. Additionally, active-duty military personnel and college graduates are eligible for extra rebates of $750 and $500, respectively.

Toyota’s bZ lineup sold 17,553 units in the U.S. market during the first half of 2026, nearly double the sales from the same period last year. Toyota attributes the significant sales growth to improvements in the new bZ’s range, charging efficiency, and overall packaging design. Compared to its predecessor, the bZ4X, the new bZ demonstrates marked advancements across multiple key metrics, attracting increased consumer interest.

As reported by InsideEVs, Toyota’s EV sales have more than doubled this year, with the bZ becoming the best-selling non-Tesla electric vehicle in the U.S. market. However, some analysts note that while the bZ excels in size and exterior design, certain key features still require enhancement. For instance, the 2026 Toyota bZ Woodland edition, despite its larger dimensions, falls short in equipment levels compared to some competitors.

Toyota’s $3,000 conquest cash offer is seen as a strategic move to capture a larger share of the EV market. Since California’s upcoming $3,500 subsidy is limited to first-time EV buyers, Toyota’s incentive may appeal to consumers with prior EV ownership experience who are considering a brand switch. However, as the full details of the offer have not yet been disclosed, consumers should monitor Toyota’s official announcements to confirm whether the incentive applies to all bZ trims or specific configurations.

InsideEVs highlights that Toyota’s incentive program reflects its commitment to accelerating its expansion in the EV market, though the automaker has yet to announce the specific end date or detailed implementation rules for the offer.
