Elon Musk's Texas AI Chip Fab ATCF Takes Shape as Construction Accelerates

Foundation Work Takes Shape, Construction Pace Exceeds Expectations

Construction of the Advanced Technology Chip Fab (ATCF), a joint venture between Tesla and SpaceX in Texas, continues to accelerate. Photographer Joe Tegtmeyer, who has long tracked Tesla and SpaceX projects in Texas, released new drone footage on August 4 showing that the foundation work at the ATCF site in Grimes County has taken clear shape. The overall outline of the facility is now visible, with a gravel mix layer being laid and GeoPiers foundation reinforcement work underway. Land grading is still in progress on the southern side of the site.

The ATCF was officially announced on March 21 this year, and in just four months, it has advanced from land preparation to foundation construction. Tegtmeyer noted that the building’s shape is becoming increasingly defined, with a growing volume of construction materials on-site, indicating that the project is progressing at an accelerated pace. Positioned as the front-end development base for Tesla and SpaceX’s overall AI chip development plan, the facility is expected to integrate logic chips, memory, and advanced packaging technologies to meet the chip demands of Tesla’s electric vehicles, Robotaxi, Optimus robot, and Earth-orbit AI data centers.

Four New Permit Applications Signal Preparation for Equipment Arrival

Recently, ATCF submitted four new construction permit applications, including plans for a large trailer area to accommodate general contractors and temporary Tesla offices. This move is seen as a key signal that preparations for equipment arrival and internal configuration are underway, indicating that backend operations have begun in parallel. While Tesla and SpaceX have not disclosed the exact production capacity of ATCF, external analyses suggest that the facility will serve as a testing ground for chip design and manufacturing, laying the technological foundation for the larger-scale Terafab chip fab in the future.

The construction progress of ATCF reflects the proactive approach of Musk-affiliated companies in expanding their semiconductor presence in Texas. Beyond ATCF, Tesla, SpaceX, and artificial intelligence startup xAI are jointly advancing the Terafab project, which is expected to further strengthen Central Texas’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. Currently, details such as the actual investment amount, production capacity, and the facility’s impact on local employment remain undisclosed. Tesla and SpaceX have also not revealed specific construction timelines or technical details. However, the drone footage confirms that ATCF’s construction is progressing faster than expected, paving the way for self-sufficiency in chip supply for Musk’s product lines.

Texas Semiconductor Expansion Continues as Musk-Affiliated Companies Accelerate Localization

The construction of ATCF marks the latest development in Musk-affiliated companies’ semiconductor expansion in Texas. Tesla’s Giga Texas super factory in Austin is already producing electric vehicles, while SpaceX’s Starbase focuses on spacecraft development. With the advancement of ATCF and Terafab, Central Texas is gradually emerging as a key semiconductor manufacturing hub for Musk’s enterprises, expected to drive the growth of the local industrial chain.

Grimes County, the chosen site for ATCF, has attracted multiple technology companies in recent years, with local economic growth already benefiting. However, the actual impact of ATCF remains to be seen, including its chip production timeline, technical specifications, and contributions to local employment, all of which require further official disclosures. For now, the drone footage and construction permit applications confirm that ATCF’s development is steadily advancing, establishing a foundation for Tesla and SpaceX’s independent AI chip development plans.
