Virtual Power Plant Integrates High-Precision Manufacturing Without Disrupting Production

Yidian Smart Energy obtained a specific electricity supply business license earlier this year, becoming one of Taiwan’s first virtual power plant operators for industrial and commercial demand response. On July 29, the company announced that Shiu Fu Pharmaceutical has officially joined its virtual power plant platform, converting approximately 1MW of on-site backup power assets into grid dispatch resources. Shiu Fu will stand by 24 hours a day to participate in Taipower’s electricity trading platform for "real-time reserve ancillary services." This collaboration marks the first successful integration of virtual power plant dispatch mechanisms in Taiwan’s high-tech pharmaceutical sector, achieving energy efficiency improvements and decarbonization goals while maintaining production stability.

Shiu Fu Pharmaceutical Chairman Weng Wei-jun stated that the pharmaceutical industry has extremely strict requirements for power stability, as any power fluctuations could affect the production quality of high-purity active pharmaceutical ingredients. To ensure the virtual power plant dispatch mechanism does not impact production processes, Yidian Smart Energy arranged for Shiu Fu’s team to visit existing client sites that employ similar energy management strategies before the collaboration. This allowed Shiu Fu to confirm the safety and precision of the automatic control system. Weng noted that over 90% of Shiu Fu’s revenue comes from global markets, including Europe, the United States, and Japan, and that low-carbon manufacturing has become a key factor in maintaining international competitiveness. This collaboration will shift the company from traditional energy-saving models toward proactive energy creation.

Under the cooperation agreement, when the grid issues a dispatch instruction, Yidian Smart Energy’s virtual power plant will use its automatic control system to seamlessly transfer part of Shiu Fu’s grid power load to on-site backup power equipment within five minutes. This will support the grid for one hour without affecting production operations. This mechanism not only aids grid stability but also transforms Shiu Fu’s idle backup power into a new revenue stream.

Energy Revenue Drives Decarbonization, Creating a Sustainable Circular Model

Yidian Smart Energy Taiwan Chairman Chen Wei-ting stated that the biotech and pharmaceutical industries have near-zero tolerance for power quality and operational reliability issues. Virtual power plant technology can simultaneously ensure power stability, energy efficiency, and decarbonization transformation within highly regulated manufacturing environments. He emphasized that after companies participate in virtual power plants, they can convert previously idle backup power into revenue, then reinvest those earnings into green electricity procurement or other sustainability initiatives, creating a "energy revenue-driven decarbonization" positive cycle.

Chen further pointed out that Yidian Smart Energy has long focused on industries highly dependent on power reliability, such as semiconductors, electronics manufacturing, and medical institutions. This collaboration with Shiu Fu Pharmaceutical demonstrates how virtual power plants can help high-energy-consuming industries achieve both decarbonization and economic benefits without compromising operational safety. Shiu Fu’s case provides a viable reference model for Taiwan’s pharmaceutical industry, proving that even under strict Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) regulations, smart energy management can drive sustainable transformation.

Shiu Fu Pharmaceutical specializes in international standards and high-end markets, with precision advanced manufacturing technology and stable quality as its core competitive advantages. The company supplies high-quality, high-purity active pharmaceutical ingredients to globally renowned pharmaceutical manufacturers. As global supply chains increasingly demand low-carbon manufacturing and green procurement, net-zero transformation has become a critical factor in maintaining competitiveness. This collaboration with Yidian Smart Energy not only strengthens Shiu Fu’s energy resilience but also explores a new path for Taiwan’s high-energy-consuming industries to balance economic benefits and environmental sustainability.
