Plentify and Deye Partner to Build Africa’s Largest Residential Virtual Power Plant with 160,000 Batteries and 2.7 GWh Capacity

South African energy technology company Plentify has become Deye’s exclusive Virtual Power Plant (VPP) partner in the country, integrating 160,000 Deye residential batteries with a total dispatchable capacity of 2.7 GWh. South Africa Advances Residential Virtual Power Plant, Surpassing State-Owned Energy Storage Program

South African energy technology company Plentify recently announced a partnership with global residential solar inverter and battery manufacturer Deye, becoming its exclusive Virtual Power Plant (VPP) partner in South Africa. The collaboration will integrate 160,000 installed Deye residential batteries nationwide, with a total dispatchable capacity of 2.7 GWh, positioning it as Africa’s largest residential VPP.

Jon Kornik, CEO of Plentify, stated that the partnership’s battery capacity is nearly double that of South Africa’s state-owned utility Eskom’s existing 1.4 GWh Battery Energy Storage Programme. While Eskom’s programme has required billions of rand and years of development, Plentify and Deye are leveraging distributed resources to rapidly integrate existing equipment for greater efficiency. Kornik noted that over 90% of solar systems in South Africa include batteries, a higher proportion than in most regions globally. However, these batteries have largely remained idle as load shedding has eased, failing to maximize their potential.

Colin Chang, Cloud Business Director at Deye, emphasized that South Africa is a critical market for Deye’s global expansion, offering unique energy transition needs that drive innovation. Over the past five years, Deye has established the largest residential energy storage installation base in South Africa and has successfully deployed VPP programmes in Australia and France, accumulating practical experience in coordinating large-scale distributed batteries.

How Virtual Power Plants Work: A Win-Win for Users and the Grid

Plentify’s VPP platform aggregates Deye batteries installed across residential properties into a single dispatchable resource, intelligently managing stored energy to balance electricity demand and strengthen grid resilience. Participating users not only enhance their energy independence but also earn additional income by contributing to grid dispatch. Plentify’s SolarBot and HotBot controllers are widely used in South Africa. SolarBot maximizes solar self-consumption by analyzing weather, load shedding schedules, and user behavior, while HotBot intelligently controls electric water heaters to reduce energy consumption and costs.

Plentify recently completed an oversubscribed Series A funding round, raising nearly $15 million in total capital to date. Investors include Secha Capital, Buffet Investments, E3 Capital, Fireball Capital, as well as new backers such as Endeavor South Africa’s Harvest Fund and French venture capital firm Satgana. The funding will support Plentify’s transition from early-stage growth to global expansion, reflecting investor confidence in its technology and market strategy.

In recent years, South Africa’s insufficient electricity supply led Eskom to implement load shedding, prompting households and businesses to install solar and battery backup systems on a large scale. Statistics show that residential and commercial users in South Africa have installed over 8.3 GW of solar PV systems, while utility-scale installations account for 2.8 GW. As countries seek more flexible electricity solutions, virtual power plants are increasingly recognized as a cost-effective alternative to building new grid infrastructure. The partnership between Plentify and Deye demonstrates how coordinating distributed energy resources can enhance grid stability while supporting South Africa’s energy transition.
