Nio Achieves 120 Million Battery Swaps as Fifth-Generation Swap Stations Launch

Nio announces its battery swap service has surpassed 120 million swaps, simultaneously launching its 4,000th and first batch of fifth-generation swap stations in Quanzhou, China, reducing swap times to under three minutes. Firefly brand plans to enter the Australian market in 2026.

120 Million Battery Swaps Mark a New Global Milestone

Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer Nio announced on August 7 that its battery swap service has officially surpassed 120 million swaps, becoming the world's first swap network to reach this scale. CEO William Li shared via the social media platform X that this milestone was achieved at 8:09:16 AM on the same day. Simultaneously, Nio activated its 4,000th swap station and unveiled the first batch of fifth-generation Power Swap Stations in Quanzhou, Fujian.

Nio stated that the fifth-generation swap stations are specifically designed for its Firefly-branded electric vehicles, reducing swap times to under three minutes and significantly improving efficiency compared to previous generations. The launch of these stations comes just six months after Nio reached 100 million swaps, indicating a continued acceleration in the expansion of its swap network. According to official data, Nio took over four years to complete its first 10 million swaps, while the increase from 80 million to 90 million swaps took only 100 days, reflecting rapidly growing demand for battery swapping.

Commercialization of Battery Swapping Technology Accelerates

Nio offers Battery as a Service (BaaS), allowing consumers to rent batteries instead of purchasing them, thereby lowering the initial cost of vehicle ownership. Currently, Nio has established over 4,000 swap stations in China and is gradually expanding into overseas markets, including Europe. William Li emphasized that battery swapping technology not only enhances energy replenishment efficiency for users but also facilitates battery management and upgrades, further promoting the adoption of electric vehicles.

Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), the world's largest battery manufacturer, is also actively developing the battery swap market. CATL is advancing swap station construction in China and plans to expand into international markets. Industry analysts note that battery swapping technology has evolved from early conceptual validation to large-scale commercial application. With Nio performing thousands of swaps daily, market acceptance continues to rise.

Early Signs of Expansion into the Australian Market

Nio’s affordable Firefly brand received approval for sale in Australia in 2025 and is expected to officially enter the local market in 2026. However, Australia currently lacks passenger-vehicle battery swap infrastructure. Nio has stated that all its swap-compatible models can also be recharged via charging stations, providing flexibility for initial market entry.

Riz Akhtar, founder of the Australian electric vehicle data analytics platform carloop, believes that battery swapping can help reduce transport emissions and accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles. He pointed out that Nio’s 120 million swap milestone demonstrates the technology’s commercial viability and offers a new solution for the Australian market. However, the high cost of swap station construction and land resource limitations remain potential challenges for the widespread adoption of battery swapping in Australia.

Nio stated that the launch of fifth-generation swap stations will further enhance user experience and lay the foundation for future expansion into overseas markets. As the swap network continues to grow, Nio aims to drive upgrades in the electric vehicle ecosystem through technological innovation and service model optimization, providing a new benchmark for the global electric vehicle market.
