Fully Automated Robotic Parking Technology Unveiled
Hyundai Motor Group announced on August 10 that it will launch the world’s first robotic parking pilot program in a residential community in Siheung City, Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. The initiative aims to address urban parking shortages and congestion through automated technology. The program is being carried out by an alliance comprising Hyundai Motor, Hyundai WIA, and Hyundai Engineering & Construction. It has been approved by the South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and designated as a smart demonstration project under the Smart City Regulatory Sandbox, securing national funding support.
The parking robots used in the pilot program were developed by Hyundai WIA and consist of a pair of ultra-thin, wide robots, each just 11 cm thick. Equipped with LiDAR sensors, the robots can precisely identify wheel size and position, transporting vehicles horizontally to designated parking spots. Even in narrow spaces, the robots operate with flexibility, significantly improving parking space utilization.
Hyundai Motor Group stated that the technology not only shortens the time drivers spend searching for parking spaces but also reduces the risk of accidents in parking lots while minimizing environmental pollution caused by vehicle idling. According to preliminary assessments, the robotic parking system could increase parking capacity by up to 50%, offering substantial relief to urban parking pressures.
Key Project Under Smart City Regulatory Sandbox
The South Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has designated this initiative as a key demonstration project under the Smart City Regulatory Sandbox, aiming to improve urban transportation and parking issues through innovative technology. The pilot program in the Siheung City residential community will evaluate the effectiveness of robotic parking technology in real-world conditions, including parking space utilization, operational safety, and environmental impact.
Hyundai Motor Group noted that as the number of vehicles in South Korea continues to rise, peak-hour parking demand has surged, exacerbating congestion in underground parking lots. Traditional parking methods not only waste time but also increase safety risks due to mixed traffic of vehicles and pedestrians. The robotic parking system, through its automated process, effectively reduces human operational errors, enhancing both parking efficiency and safety.
Currently, Hyundai Motor Group has not disclosed the specific scale or timeline of the pilot program, nor has it clarified whether the robots are compatible with all vehicle models. However, the group emphasized that if the pilot proves successful, the technology could be expanded to other cities or commercial areas, offering a new solution to urban parking challenges. The South Korean government has high expectations for the program, hoping that smart city initiatives will further improve the quality of life for residents.
