Larchmont Village Launches Lamppost EV Chargers, Introducing Innovative Charging Model in New York State
On August 12, 2026, Larchmont Village in Westchester County, New York, became the first location in the state to deploy lamppost-mounted electric vehicle (EV) chargers, installed by startup Voltpost. The chargers are located in the parking lot at 61 Wendt Avenue, near the village’s train station and commercial hub, offering convenient access. The project received funding from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) under its Vehicle-to-Grid program, marking the debut of a new model for rapidly deploying charging networks using existing infrastructure.
Jeff Prosserman, CEO and Co-Founder of Voltpost, stated that this deployment demonstrates the potential of transforming existing lampposts into a charging network, meeting community charging needs at lower costs and faster speeds. He emphasized that this model is particularly suited for urban areas with limited parking space, effectively improving charging accessibility and serving as a demonstration for other cities.
Charger Design and Performance
Voltpost’s newly installed Air series chargers allow two units to be mounted on a single lamppost, each with a maximum output of 9.6 kilowatts, supporting Level 2 charging with J1772 connectors. The chargers are positioned approximately 10 feet (3 meters) above ground, featuring weatherproof and vandal-resistant designs with retractable cables for user convenience. According to Voltpost, this setup can fully charge an EV in 6 to 10 hours, making it ideal for residential areas, commercial districts, or public parking lots where vehicles are parked for extended periods.
The chargers are connected to the cloud via AT&T’s network, allowing users to check charging locations, real-time status, and charging progress through the Voltpost app. Prosserman noted that retrofitting existing lampposts reduces installation time to just a few hours, with costs and footprint a fraction of those for traditional charging stations. This approach effectively addresses the shortage of urban charging infrastructure while minimizing ground space usage, ensuring pedestrian and vehicle traffic remains unimpeded.
Expansion Plans and Partnerships
Voltpost plans to expand its lamppost chargers to Yonkers and Rye in Westchester County within the coming months, further broadening its service area. This deployment is part of the company’s broader strategy in the Northeast U.S. region. Recently, Voltpost partnered with EV charging equipment provider InCharge Energy to accelerate the rollout of lamppost chargers across New York State, Connecticut, and California. InCharge Energy will support Voltpost in rapidly deploying lamppost chargers nationwide to meet the urgent demand for charging infrastructure in various states.
The launch of Larchmont Village’s charging station not only provides residents with more convenient charging options but also offers a new approach to building EV charging networks in New York State and across the U.S. Voltpost’s lamppost charging model is particularly well-suited for urban areas with limited parking space, significantly enhancing charging accessibility. While the exact number of chargers installed in Larchmont has not been disclosed, this pilot project demonstrates the potential of leveraging existing infrastructure to quickly establish charging networks. NYSERDA’s funding and AT&T’s network support have laid the groundwork for scaling this model, with the potential to replicate the experience in more cities in the future.
