Battery Swapping Lowers Purchase Costs, Introducing New Competition to Entry-Level Market
Arcfox, an electric vehicle brand under BAIC Group, recently announced a partnership with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) to launch the entry-level Beta T1, which supports battery swapping. The model is priced from just 62,800 yuan ($9,310). Last week, the vehicle was listed in filings released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), making it one of the few products to enter the affordable electric vehicle market with battery-swapping capability.
The Arcfox Beta T1 features a compact design, targeting budget-conscious consumers. Through the battery-swapping model, buyers no longer need to bear the full cost of the battery upfront; instead, they pay only for the vehicle itself, while the battery can be obtained through leasing or installment plans. This approach significantly lowers the barrier to purchasing an EV, particularly for first-time buyers or price-sensitive consumers.
According to official specifications, the base version of the Beta T1 offers a range of 350 km (CLTC standard), while the higher-end version extends the range to 450 km. The vehicle uses lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which are known for their low cost, high safety, and long cycle life, making them well-suited for large-scale battery-swapping applications. While the official battery leasing costs have not yet been disclosed, industry observers widely believe that the long-term cost of ownership will be lower than that of traditional charging-based EVs.
CATL’s Battery Swap Network Covers 180 Cities, Providing Infrastructure for Beta T1
To support the launch of the Beta T1, CATL has established 2,000 Choco swap stations across 180 cities in China. These stations are primarily located in first- and second-tier cities, as well as some third- and fourth-tier cities, initially meeting the battery-swapping needs of Beta T1 users. Unlike NIO, which has focused on the premium segment with its battery-swapping models, the Arcfox Beta T1’s affordable pricing strategy aims to attract a broader range of consumers.
