BEV Sales Hit Record High, Plugin Vehicle Market Share Reaches 37%
Europe’s electric vehicle market experienced explosive growth in June, with battery-electric vehicle (BEV) registrations reaching 366,000 units, a 50% year-over-year increase and a new all-time high. Driven by more affordable new models, high fuel prices, and the mass arrival of Chinese brands, BEV demand surged, propelling overall plugin vehicle (BEV + PHEV) registrations up 41% year-over-year to a 37% market share.
June’s total new vehicle sales in Europe reached 1.4 million units, a 13% year-over-year increase. BEVs accounted for 26% of the market, while plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) held 11%. BEVs comprised 71% of all plugin sales, with a yearly average market share of 69%, the highest since 2012. In contrast, PHEV growth slowed to 23% year-over-year, signaling a market shift toward fully electric vehicles. Traditional internal combustion engine vehicles continued to decline, with petrol vehicle sales dropping 12% year-over-year to a 21% market share, while diesel vehicles plummeted 17% to just 6%. Non-plugin hybrids (HEVs) grew 17% year-over-year, capturing a 35% market share. Overall, 72% of all vehicles sold in Europe in June featured some form of electrification.
Tesla Model Y Claims Top Spot Across All Segments, Model 3 Sales Surge 67%
Tesla delivered a strong performance in Europe, with the Model Y registering 34,480 units, a 43% year-over-year increase. This marked its best result since March 2023 and secured the Model Y the top spot among all vehicle models sold in Europe for June, outperforming the second-place Dacia Sandero by 9,000 units. The Model Y also led monthly sales in the United Kingdom, Iceland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Denmark, and Norway, demonstrating its cross-market competitiveness. Tesla noted that the Model Y, priced from €40,000 and on the market for six years, continues to offer high value for money, appealing to practical-minded consumers.
The Model 3 also saw significant growth, with 18,028 units registered in June, a 67% year-over-year increase, ranking seventh in Europe’s overall vehicle market. With prices starting around €35,000, the Model 3 competes with smaller hatchbacks, attracting budget-conscious buyers. Despite sedans being less popular than SUVs in Europe, the Model 3 is expected to regain a top-three sales position in 2026.
Chinese Brands Gain Ground, BYD Atto 2 Ranks Third
Chinese brands continued to expand their presence in Europe, with the BYD Atto 2 registering 13,100 units in June, a record high and the third-best-selling BEV in the region. The Atto 2’s success was driven by its newly launched plug-in hybrid version, equipped with an 18 kWh battery offering approximately 90 km of electric range and vehicle-to-load (V2L) capability. BYD’s upcoming Dolphin G PHEV, set for production in Hungary, is expected to further strengthen its competitiveness in Europe.
Leapmotor’s T03 also performed well, ranking third in the A-segment market behind the Dacia Spring. The A-segment is poised to be the first to achieve full BEV dominance, as traditional internal combustion engine vehicles lose ground and new models like the Renault Twingo prepare to enter the market, further boosting BEV adoption.
