Global plugin vehicle registrations reached approximately 2 million units in June 2026, an 8% increase year-over-year. Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) led the growth with a 21% year-over-year increase, accounting for 72% of all plugin sales—around 1.4 million units—and setting a new historical record. In contrast, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) saw a 14% year-over-year decline, signaling an accelerating shift in market demand toward fully electric vehicles.

The share of battery-electric vehicles in the global automotive market continued to climb, reaching 22% in June. When including PHEVs, the total share rose to 30%. Analysts suggest that the BEV share could surpass 75% for the full year 2026, marking the highest level since 2012.

Tesla and Chinese Brands Dominate Market, Model Y Sets Monthly Sales Record

The Tesla Model Y achieved a historic milestone in June 2026, with sales of 153,813 units, a 21% year-over-year increase and its best monthly performance ever. The Model 3 also saw strong growth, delivering 60,000 units, a 30% year-over-year rise and its highest figure since September 2025. Tesla’s total deliveries reached nearly 220,000 units, a 24% year-over-year increase, solidifying its position as the global leader in electric vehicles.

Chinese brands continued to expand their influence in the global EV market. The BYD Song ranked second globally with 62,000 units sold, while the BYD Yuan Up/Atto 2 set a new monthly registration record with 37,589 units. The Leapmotor A10, launched just four months prior, achieved 25,000 registrations in June, marking the brand’s best performance to date. Other standout models included the Changan Qiyuan Q05 and Wuling Bingo Pro.

Market Landscape Shifts as Leapmotor Overtakes Geely to Claim Third Place

June 2026 brought significant changes to the global EV market, with Leapmotor surpassing Geely to become the third-largest electric vehicle brand, recording 93,376 units in monthly sales. Leapmotor’s momentum was driven by the recent launches of models such as the A10, A05, D19, and D99, which have further strengthened its market position. Meanwhile, Geely experienced a slight decline in market share due to weaker performance across its brand portfolio.

BYD returned to positive sales growth, with exports now accounting for over 40% of its total sales. Other Chinese brands also saw strong performances, with Zeekr achieving a record 35,000 units in monthly sales. The Zeekr 007 sedan and 7 GT wagon combined for nearly 8,000 units sold. SAIC’s MG brand also set a new monthly sales record, driven by strong demand for the MG4.

Among legacy automakers, Toyota ranked seventh with 46,000 units sold, trailing the Volkswagen Group. BMW and Mercedes-Benz delivered 54,000 and 36,000 units, respectively, demonstrating steady progress in their electric vehicle transitions. Models such as the BMW iX3 and iX1/X1 PHEV stood out in their performance.

Brand Market Share Shifts: BYD Leads as Tesla Widens Gap Over Volkswagen

In the first half of 2026, BYD maintained its lead in the global EV market with a 19.2% share, while Geely held second place at 9.9%, though its share declined by 0.2 percentage points year-over-year. Tesla ranked third with an 8.9% share, expanding its lead over the Volkswagen Group, which stood at 7.3%.

In the battery-electric vehicle segment, BYD led with a 13.9% share, followed by Tesla at 12.6%, and Geely at 8.7%. SAIC and the Volkswagen Group trailed closely with 6.3% and 6.6% shares, respectively. Leapmotor secured a 3.8% share, positioning itself to challenge Hyundai–Kia for sixth place in the coming months.

Market analysts note that as Chinese brands continue to expand their presence in export markets, the global EV landscape is poised for further transformation. The BYD Song is expected to surpass the Tesla Model 3 in the second half of 2026, reclaiming its position as the world’s second-best-selling electric vehicle. Leapmotor may also challenge Hyundai–Kia’s market position in the near future.
