New York State’s First Lamppost EV Chargers Go Live as Voltpost Expands Low-Cost Model in Westchester County

EV charging startup Voltpost has activated New York State’s first lamppost-mounted EV chargers in the Village of Larchmont, delivering 9.6 kilowatts per unit and requiring 6 to 10 hours for a full charge. Lampposts Transformed into Charging Stations: New York State’s First Chargers Now Operational

EV charging startup Voltpost officially launched New York State’s first lamppost-mounted electric vehicle chargers in the Village of Larchmont, Westchester County, on August 12. This deployment marks the introduction of a new model that rapidly expands charging networks by utilizing existing public infrastructure. The first chargers are installed in a parking lot at 61 Wendt Avenue in Larchmont, near a train station and commercial district, and are now open for public use.

Voltpost’s “Air” chargers feature a lamppost-mounted design, with each lamppost capable of supporting two charging units. Each unit delivers a maximum output of 9.6 kilowatts, supporting Level 2 charging with J1772 connectors. The chargers are installed approximately 10 feet (3 meters) above ground, effectively protecting them from severe weather and vandalism, and are equipped with retractable cables for user convenience. According to Voltpost, this design can fully charge an EV battery in 6 to 10 hours, making it ideal for scenarios where vehicles are parked for extended periods, such as residential areas, office buildings, or shopping center parking lots.

Compared to traditional ground-mounted charging stations, lamppost chargers can be installed in just a few hours, with significantly lower deployment costs and a smaller footprint. NYSERDA-Funded Initiative: Westchester County Serves as First Pilot

The Larchmont charger deployment received funding from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s (NYSERDA) Vehicle to Grid program, representing Voltpost’s first real-world application in Westchester County. NYSERDA’s support has not only accelerated the installation of charging infrastructure but also laid the groundwork for future expansion.

Voltpost plans to expand its charging network to the City of Yonkers and the City/Town of Rye in Westchester County within the coming months, further increasing EV charging coverage in the region. The company recently partnered with EV charging installation and maintenance provider InCharge Energy to accelerate the nationwide deployment of lamppost chargers, with an initial focus on New York State, Connecticut, and California.

The chargers are connected via the AT&T network, allowing users to check charging locations, availability, and session progress in real time through the Voltpost app. Prosserman emphasized that the lamppost charger model is particularly well-suited for urban areas with limited parking, as it effectively utilizes existing space to enhance the accessibility of charging infrastructure.

The Larchmont charging station is now operational, though Voltpost has not disclosed the total number of chargers installed in the village or provided a specific timeline for deployments in Yonkers and Rye. The company states that the installation cost of lamppost chargers is far lower than that of traditional charging stations but has not provided specific comparative data. As New York State continues to advance its EV infrastructure development, the lamppost charger model is poised to become a key option for municipal evaluation.
