Dallas Airport Deploys All-Electric PANTHER Fire Truck: First Airport Application with Faster Response Than Diesel Vehicles

All-Electric Fire Truck Deployed at Dallas Airport

Dallas Love Field Airport has officially deployed the all-electric PANTHER fire truck, becoming the first airport globally to integrate an electric fire truck into its firefighting system. Manufactured by Austria’s Rosenbauer, the PANTHER electric fire truck is equipped with four electric motors delivering a maximum output of 980 horsepower, which can surge to 1,200 horsepower in acceleration mode. Despite a gross vehicle weight of 40.5 tons, the truck accelerates from 0 to 80 km/h in just 20 seconds—8 seconds faster than conventional diesel fire trucks—significantly improving emergency response times at the airport.

The PANTHER electric fire truck features a 256 kWh high-capacity battery that not only powers the vehicle but also serves as a mobile power source at fire scenes, supplying electricity to rescue equipment. Its electric water pump system projects water streams up to 76 meters, a 40% increase in range compared to diesel fire trucks, further enhancing firefighting efficiency. To address potential battery depletion, the truck retains a backup diesel engine to ensure continuous operation in emergencies.

400 kW Fast-Charging System Ensures Continuous Deployment

To maintain the PANTHER electric fire truck in a constant state of readiness, Dallas Love Field Airport has installed a 400 kW fast-charging station. This charging system enables rapid recharging and supports the truck’s operational demands during consecutive deployments. The charging station also integrates water tank refilling, equipment loading, and crew rotation functions, further optimizing the fire truck’s operational efficiency.

Dallas Love Field Airport handles approximately 250,000 flight operations annually. To improve land use efficiency, the airport has consolidated its multiple fire stations into a single station, Station 21. This consolidation places greater emphasis on the fire truck’s response speed and coverage range to ensure airport safety. Airport authorities state that the PANTHER’s rapid acceleration will enhance the airport’s emergency response capabilities.

Six-Month Operational Test to Evaluate Electric Fire Truck Performance

To assess the reliability of the electric fire truck in real-world operations, Dallas Love Field Airport launched a six-month testing period beginning in February 2026. During this period, the PANTHER electric fire truck will participate in daily firefighting drills and emergency response missions. Firefighters will comprehensively evaluate its acceleration, range, water projection efficiency, and on-site power supply capabilities, comparing it against traditional diesel fire trucks. The test results will serve as a critical reference for future decisions on expanding the adoption of electric fire trucks or modifying existing models.

While electric fire trucks demonstrate advantages in acceleration and environmental performance, concerns remain regarding long-term reliability, battery performance in extreme climates, and safety management of high-voltage systems. The outcomes of Dallas Airport’s testing will provide valuable insights for airports and urban fire departments worldwide, helping determine whether electric fire trucks can become the mainstream choice for future firefighting equipment.
