Despite a rush to install solar projects ahead of the tax credit’s expiration, market demand did not vanish. Some surveys revealed that many homeowners were initially unaware of the 30% tax credit, which may explain why the market decline was less severe than expected. Additionally, demand for home energy storage systems has surged, becoming a new driving force for the market and reflecting consumers' growing emphasis on energy independence.

Energy Storage Installation Rates Soar, Home Energy Independence Becomes a Trend

In 2025, up to 45% of newly installed solar systems in the United States included energy storage technology, a dramatic increase from the 6% recorded in 2020. This shift underscores the rising importance consumers place on grid stability and energy security. In April 2026, Jim Reilly, an engineer at GM Defense, shared his experience with a home microgrid system on social media, stating, "This system has allowed me to achieve energy independence. No matter how energy prices fluctuate externally, my household’s electricity costs remain stable."

Reilly’s system integrates a GM Energy home backup battery, a GMC Sierra EV, and a rooftop solar array, enabling round-the-clock energy self-sufficiency. Similar cases are not isolated. Multiple users have shared their long-term experiences with solar systems. One user, Craig Merrow, reported that the 6.5 kW solar system he installed ten years ago generates between 16 kWh per day in winter and up to 38 kWh per day during late spring, while his household’s average daily consumption is only 5 to 6 kWh. Merrow noted, "Through passive energy-saving design and energy storage, my home has achieved zero electricity bills and can operate normally even during power outages."

Market Transformation: Long-Term Value Replaces Short-Term Subsidies

Although the elimination of the tax credit has caused short-term market disruption, industry observers note that consumer decision-making has shifted from merely pursuing subsidies to prioritizing long-term energy security. Reports from SEIA and Wood Mackenzie highlight that the rise in energy storage installation rates reflects users' focus on grid resilience rather than reliance on policy incentives. Analysts believe that as technology costs decline and the risks of extreme weather increase, the economic benefits of pairing solar with storage will continue to improve, further driving structural market transformation.

However, industry experts caution consumers that tax regulations are complex and vary by state, and professional consultation is recommended when evaluating installation options to fully leverage existing incentives. While federal subsidies have been eliminated, some states still offer additional incentives, such as California’s self-consumption electricity pricing mechanism or Texas’s net metering policies, which help reduce the upfront investment threshold for users.
