Global Best-Selling Model Embarks on Electrification as Toyota’s Internal Crisis Intensifies
Toyota has announced that the next-generation Corolla will be developed on an all-new platform capable of supporting battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, hybrid, and internal combustion powertrains. The Corolla, which has sold over 57 million units globally since its launch in 1966 and undergone 12 model updates, remains the world’s best-selling vehicle. However, Toyota’s leadership recently revealed in an NHK interview that the company is grappling with a profound sense of crisis amid competitive pressure from Chinese and U.S. electric vehicle manufacturers.
In an interview aired on July 19, Akio Toyoda warned that Toyota risks being left behind if it fails to break free from its past success. He emphasized that rapid technological change and the rise of competitors are forcing the company to accelerate its transformation. Toyota President Koji Sato, speaking at the Japan Mobility Show in October 2025, described the next-generation Corolla as “packed with innovations” and confirmed it would be built on a new platform supporting all powertrain options.
New Platform Supports All Powertrains, but Engineers Admit Lagging Behind China
An NHK documentary team gained access to Toyota’s development facility in Japan, where the progress of the next-generation Corolla was unveiled. Footage showed multiple Corolla Concept prototypes, including sedan, hatchback, crossover, and GR performance variants, all retaining the design language of the concept car revealed at the 2025 Japan Mobility Show. Sato had previously stated that regardless of powertrain, the goal was to create “attractive cars that people want to drive.”
However, Toyota engineers expressed concerns about the company’s development pace during the interview. One engineer candidly admitted, “To be honest, I think we are losing to China.” This remark underscored Toyota’s perceived gap in electric vehicle technology and manufacturing processes compared to Chinese automakers like BYD. While Toyota’s new platform supports multiple powertrains, industry observers argue that such a “universal platform” cannot match the advantages of a dedicated EV platform, such as greater battery space and structural efficiency.
Toyota’s recent actions highlight its mounting pressure to transform. Earlier this year, the company canceled the development of its flagship all-electric model, the Lexus LF-ZC, which was originally intended to feature next-generation battery technology. Although Toyota has introduced models like the bZ4X and the electric C-HR, most are adaptations of existing hybrid platforms, and a dedicated EV platform remains elusive. In contrast, BYD surpassed Ford in 2025 to become the world’s sixth-largest automaker, with CEO Wang Chuanfu declaring that the company aims to become the largest automaker globally within five years.
Cautious Transition Raises Questions About Toyota’s Ability to Regain Leadership
In his interview, Akio Toyoda stressed that the sense of crisis stems from the inability to rely on past successes. He noted that technological change and the rise of competitors are inevitable trends, and Toyota must accelerate its transformation or risk losing its market dominance. However, whether the new platform can compensate for Toyota’s lag in battery technology, electric drivetrains, and software remains uncertain.
Toyota has not yet announced a release timeline for the next-generation Corolla, but industry observers widely expect the electrification of this globally dominant model to serve as a critical indicator of whether Toyota can reclaim its leadership position. The company’s strategy in the electric vehicle sector will not only shape its own future but also influence the competitive landscape of the global automotive industry.
