Ford F-150 Electric Pickup Now Capable of Directly Powering Home Electrical Panels

Ford Introduces Vehicle-to-Home Power Solution

Ford Motor Company has announced that its F-150 Lightning electric pickup and F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid models can now directly connect to a home’s main electrical panel via the GenerLink transfer switch, providing power to hard-wired essentials during outages. Developed in collaboration with Global Power Products, this technology is compatible with specific models equipped with the 240V Pro Power Onboard outlet. It enables power supply to appliances such as refrigerators, Wi-Fi routers, well pumps, and wall outlets without the need to run extension cords through windows or doors.

Ford states that over 800 utilities across the United States have approved the installation of the GenerLink system. Owners can connect their vehicles to the home’s electrical panel using a dedicated cable, creating a single, secure power channel. To prevent the vehicle’s safety sensors from mistakenly cutting off power, the system includes a 12-inch Ford Vehicle Connector to ensure stable electricity flow.

Compatible Models and Backup Capabilities

The GenerLink transfer switch currently supports the 2022-2025 F-150 Lightning models equipped with the 9.6-kW Pro Power Onboard system, as well as the 2021-2026 F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid models with the 7.2-kW Pro Power Onboard. According to Ford’s estimates, the F-150 PowerBoost Hybrid can provide backup power to an average home for up to five days, while the standard-range F-150 Lightning can support approximately two days, and the extended-range model up to three days. Actual backup duration will depend on the household’s electricity consumption.

Ford emphasizes that this technology significantly enhances the utility of the Pro Power Onboard outlet during outages, eliminating the need for traditional generators or temporary wiring. The company has tested the system in multiple states and continues to work with utilities to expand approval for meter-mounted installations, simplifying the setup process.

Equipment and Installation Costs

The GenerLink equipment bundle, which includes the transfer switch, GenerLok cord, and Ford Vehicle Connector, is priced at approximately $1,100. Installation costs vary depending on utility regulations and installation methods: if the transfer switch is permitted behind the electric meter, costs range from $250 to $450; if installed adjacent to the meter, costs can be between $1,000 and $1,500. All installations must be performed by a qualified electrician or utility company.

Ford notes that this solution is partly designed for existing F-150 Lightning owners, as the company has stopped accepting new orders for the current Lightning electric pickup but will continue to support existing customers. Ford also revealed that its next-generation pickup will feature an extended-range electric powertrain, further enhancing the vehicle’s energy management capabilities.

The introduction of this technology transforms electric vehicles from mere transportation into reliable sources of home backup power. For regions frequently facing power outages, the GenerLink system offers a more convenient and secure solution, allowing homeowners to maintain essential functions during emergencies.
