Rockhound Complex Surpasses 1 GW, Becomes One of the Largest Renewable Energy Hubs in the U.S.
U.S. renewable energy developer Origis Energy announced that its Rockhound solar complex in Ector County, West Texas, has completed the latest three phases of solar installations, adding 500 MWdc of capacity and bringing the project’s total operational scale to nearly 1 GW. This expansion establishes Rockhound as one of the largest renewable energy complexes in the United States.
Origis Energy stated that the Rockhound complex is now halfway through its construction, with plans to add another 1 GW of solar and battery storage by 2029, ultimately reaching a total capacity of 2 GW. The company emphasized that the complex supplies power under long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) to several international corporations, including Meta, Occidental, dsm-firmenich, and Bekaert, providing a stable source of renewable energy.
Energy Storage Becomes Next Phase Focus, Targeting Data Center Demand
Origis Energy plans to strengthen its energy storage infrastructure in the next phase to address peak demand on the Texas grid. The company noted that energy storage facilities will effectively store excess daytime power and release it during nighttime or peak demand periods, enhancing grid stability. Additionally, Origis is actively promoting co-location solutions to data center operators, aiming to attract more tech companies through long-term corporate power contracts.
