Clear Timeline for FSD Integration Confirmed by Musk

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced during a recent earnings call that the company’s Semi electric truck is expected to have Full Self-Driving (FSD) functionality operational by early 2027. Musk stated that Tesla plans to complete the development and testing of FSD on the Semi by the end of this year or early next year, with the truck now in high-volume commercial production. This announcement marks a significant step in Tesla’s integration of autonomous driving technology into the commercial electric vehicle sector.

Musk emphasized that Tesla’s primary focus remains on improving the safety performance of FSD in the Model 3, Model Y, and Robotaxi models, ensuring that the development of the Semi does not disrupt progress on existing vehicles. He noted that the FSD system for the Semi will be adapted from current technology to meet the specific requirements of commercial trucks.

On-Road Testing Underway with Hardware in Place

In recent months, Tesla Semi test vehicles equipped with additional sensors and mounting hardware have been spotted on public roads in California, indicating that FSD testing is actively underway. According to images and sightings, the test vehicles were not towing trailers, suggesting they were being used for functional validation around Tesla’s design center in California. Tesla has previously employed similar testing equipment on passenger models like the Model 3 and Model Y to verify the reliability and safety of its FSD hardware and software.

The latest design of the Tesla Semi was finalized in late 2025, with vehicles now leaving the factory equipped with all necessary hardware for future autonomous driving capabilities. The Semi is available in two range variants: the Standard Range model features a 548 kWh battery pack with a range exceeding 500 km, while the Long Range model is equipped with an 822 kWh battery pack, delivering a range of over 800 km under a 37-tonne load. Both models utilize Tesla’s in-house 4680 battery cells and support Megacharger charging with a maximum power output of 1.2 MW, significantly reducing charging times.

Production Capacity and Charging Network Expand to 50,000 Units Annually

Tesla’s factory in Nevada, completed earlier this year, is now capable of producing up to 50,000 Semi electric trucks annually, preparing for large-scale commercial deployment. To support fleet operations, Tesla opened its first Semi-dedicated Megacharger station in July 2026, located in Bloomington, east of Los Angeles, California. The station features six charging stalls, each with a maximum output of 1.2 MW, and includes dedicated lanes designed for large trucks to facilitate quick entry and exit during charging.

Since its initial unveiling in 2017, the Tesla Semi has undergone nearly a decade of research and design iterations, culminating in the finalized design and mass production achieved by the end of 2025. Musk’s latest announcement signals Tesla’s push to integrate autonomous driving technology into the electric truck sector. However, the actual deployment of FSD in commercial vehicles will require approval from relevant regulatory authorities. Tesla has not yet released specific safety performance data or a commercialization timeline for FSD on the Semi, leaving future developments to be observed.
