Flagship Sedan 'Da Han' Teaser Revealed
Chinese electric vehicle leader BYD released teaser images of its flagship sedan, the Da Han, on its official Weibo account on July 25. The new model is equipped with a 102 kWh lithium iron phosphate Blade Battery, delivering a CLTC range of 1,008 km in its rear-wheel-drive configuration, making it the longest-range mass-produced electric sedan currently known. BYD also announced that the vehicle will feature Flash Charging technology, capable of charging from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes and from 10% to 97% in 9 minutes, approaching the refueling efficiency of traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.
The teaser images show that the Da Han integrates aerodynamic spoiler designs on the lower front bumper and is equipped with a LiDAR sensor to enhance advanced driver-assistance systems. The vehicle measures 5.26 meters in length and weighs over 2,500 kg. The single-motor rear-wheel-drive version offers a maximum power output of 370 kW, while the dual-motor version delivers a combined 570 kW, providing ample power for this large luxury sedan.
Technical Specifications and Charging Performance
The Da Han is powered by BYD’s latest 102 kWh Blade Battery, which utilizes lithium iron phosphate technology. The company states that the rear-wheel-drive version can achieve a range of 1,008 km under the CLTC testing cycle. While only CLTC data has been released so far, industry analysts estimate that the WLTP range could exceed 750 km, sufficient for long-distance travel. BYD emphasizes that the high energy density and safety of the Blade Battery are key to achieving this range breakthrough, though official WLTP certification results have not yet been disclosed.
Flash Charging technology is another highlight of the Da Han. BYD claims that, with compatible charging infrastructure, the vehicle can charge from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes and from 10% to 97% in 9 minutes. In comparison, refueling a traditional gasoline vehicle typically takes 3 to 5 minutes, meaning the Da Han’s charging speed is approaching or even surpassing the energy replenishment efficiency of internal combustion engine vehicles. However, details regarding the availability of Flash Charging-compatible stations and whether specific high-power chargers are required remain undisclosed.
Market Positioning and Competitive Landscape
The Da Han is positioned as a luxury sedan for both business and family use, targeting consumers who prioritize efficient charging and long-range capabilities. BYD plans to officially unveil the vehicle at the Chengdu Auto Show in August, where full specifications, pricing, and market launch details will be announced. Industry observers expect the Da Han to further strengthen BYD’s competitiveness in the premium electric vehicle market, challenging models such as the Tesla Model 3 and NIO ET7.
BYD has been highly active in recent months. In April, the company launched its largest electric vehicle to date, the Da Tang SUV, which secured over 30,000 pre-orders within the first 24 hours, with a starting price equivalent to approximately 1.15 million New Taiwan Dollars. The introduction of the Da Han not only continues BYD’s expansion in the large electric vehicle segment but also pushes the boundaries of electric vehicle range and charging speed. However, the widespread adoption of Flash Charging technology, the readiness of supporting charging infrastructure, and the vehicle’s real-world range performance under various conditions remain key concerns for consumers and the market.
The unveiling of the Da Han has also drawn increased attention to BYD’s global electric vehicle strategy. The company has already launched multiple electric models in markets including China, Japan, and Australia, covering everything from compact electric vehicles to large SUVs. With the addition of the Da Han, BYD’s technological capabilities in the electric sedan segment will be further validated, offering consumers an electric vehicle experience that closely mirrors that of traditional internal combustion engine cars.
