Tesla to Build Largest Urban Supercharger Station in the U.S. with 124 V4 Stalls in San Francisco

124-Stall V4 Supercharger Station Located in Southern San Francisco

Tesla has submitted planning permits to the San Francisco municipal government to build a 124-stall V4 Supercharger station on a taxi storage lot at the intersection of Alemany and Bayshore. This charging station will not only be the largest Supercharger facility within San Francisco but also the highest-capacity urban charging station in the U.S. The site is adjacent to U.S. Highway 101, situated in a mixed residential and commercial area, differing from the traditional highway rest-stop model.

According to Tesla’s submitted planning documents, the station will include 124 V4 charging stalls, 28 parking lot lights, and complete electrical infrastructure. The V4 platform represents Tesla’s latest charging technology, capable of delivering up to 500 kW of power, significantly reducing charging time. Tesla activated its first full V4 Supercharger station last year, confirming the technology’s viability.

Comprehensive Ancillary Facilities Designed for Urban Charging Demand

Tesla has emphasized urban charging needs in its planning, positioning the station as “density-oriented” rather than “trip-oriented.” The San Francisco Bay Area has one of the highest concentrations of Tesla owners in the country, with many residents living in apartments or condominiums lacking private charging options and relying on public charging stations. The planned 124-stall capacity far exceeds the typical urban Supercharger station, which usually ranges from a few to a couple dozen stalls, underscoring Tesla’s focus on local charging demand.

The station will feature a 400-square-foot amenity building, including two gender-neutral ADA-compliant restrooms equipped with diaper-changing stations. Additionally, the site will include a vending area offering Cotti-branded coffee and hot beverages, as well as refrigerated and ambient-temperature snack vending machines. The back-of-house space will contain storage, cleaning equipment, and IT/security cabinets to ensure smooth operations. Tesla’s documents describe this structure as a “micro-amenity” building, with a minimalist design distinct from the retro style of Tesla’s Hollywood diner.

Dual Breakthrough in Technology and Scale to Alleviate Urban Charging Pressure

Tesla has already constructed multiple large Supercharger stations along California highways, such as those along Interstate 5 between San Francisco and Los Angeles, with some sites exceeding 100 stalls. However, urban locations rarely feature stations with more than 20 stalls due to high land costs. The planned 124-stall Supercharger in San Francisco not only sets a new record for urban Supercharger capacity in the U.S. but also reflects Tesla’s long-term strategy for urban charging infrastructure.

The V4 platform’s 500 kW charging capacity can substantially reduce charging time, making it particularly suitable for long-distance travelers or high-frequency users. Tesla’s first full V4 station, activated last year, has demonstrated the technology’s reliability. The scale and configuration of the San Francisco site are seen as a forward-looking investment in future charging demand. While Tesla has not yet announced a construction timeline or opening date, the planning documents clearly outline the site’s layout and equipment specifications, indicating the project is in an advanced stage of development.

The San Francisco municipal government has not issued an official response to the planning proposal, nor has it disclosed whether community feedback or environmental impact assessments will be conducted. Given the site’s location near the busy U.S. Highway 101, it is expected to attract significant commuter and tourist traffic. However, challenges such as land-use changes and electrical infrastructure upgrades may impact the project’s timeline. Tesla’s previous urban Supercharger deployments have primarily been small-scale; if this 124-stall project is successfully completed, it will set a new benchmark for urban charging infrastructure.
