Some cases have required complete computer chip replacements. Experts warn the issue could trigger large-scale warranty disputes, placing Tesla under pressure to compensate HW3 owners.

Overheating Alerts Surge Following FSD v14 Lite Rollout

After Tesla recently pushed the FSD v14 Lite update to vehicles equipped with Hardware 3 (HW3), multiple owners have reported overheating alerts from the Autopilot electronic control unit (ECU), leading to forced disengagement of autonomous driving functions. Service-mode screenshots provided by owners show the Autopilot ECU triggering the APP_w141_ECU_Thermal_Issue fault code, indicating chip temperatures exceeding the 90°C safety threshold. Some owners measured temperatures as high as 96°C. The system then displays a "red hands" icon and enters a selfDrivingUnavailable state, requiring the computer to cool down before FSD can be reactivated.

The issue emerged rapidly after FSD v14 Lite was widely released to the HW3 fleet on July 21, 2026. At least four owners have directly reported the same problem. Owners noted that the frequency of overheating alerts and forced disengagements increased significantly after installing FSD v14 Lite, with some cases requiring Autopilot computer chip replacements at Tesla Service centers.

HW3’s Insufficient Computing Power Becomes Autonomy Bottleneck

The HW3 Autopilot computer, introduced in 2019, is equipped with 8GB of RAM and has memory bandwidth only one-eighth that of HW4, long considered a computational bottleneck for Tesla’s autonomous driving features. Tesla has previously acknowledged that HW3 cannot achieve unsupervised self-driving, and approximately 4 million vehicles with HW3 may require chip replacements or compensation. FSD v14 Lite is a streamlined version optimized for HW3 hardware, yet its computational demands still far exceed HW3’s design limits.

In addition to overheating alerts, owners have reported issues such as phantom braking, system hesitation, and brake juddering with FSD v14 Lite, indicating the chip’s computational capacity has reached a critical point. Experts analyze that the FSD v14 Lite model is more complex than previous versions, further increasing the computational load on HW3 and raising the risk of overheating. HW3 hardware, now seven years old, was not originally designed to handle the high computational demands of current autonomous driving software, exacerbating the overheating problem.

Tesla Faces Warranty and Compensation Pressures

Some owners have reported that overheating issues have led to complete failures of the Autopilot computer, necessitating part replacements. If FSD v14 Lite is indeed accelerating the degradation of HW3 chips, Tesla could face large-scale warranty claims and compensation pressures. Tesla has not officially responded to whether FSD v14 Lite is the primary cause of overheating, but reports of thermal alerts and chip failures have clustered around the release of this version. Given that HW3 chips were already operating at their computational limits, there are concerns that the software update may have exacerbated hardware strain.

Experts warn that if Tesla cannot effectively control the overheating issue, it could trigger collective warranty disputes among HW3 owners and even accelerate related litigation. Owners who receive overheating alerts are advised to immediately check their cooling systems to avoid overlooking potential failure risks. Tesla has not yet announced a long-term solution for HW3 owners, but this issue may compel the company to expedite chip replacements or offer compensation measures.
