FSD Standard Mode Exceeds Speed Limit by 28 km/h, Results in Immediate Fine
Over the weekend of July 20, 2026, Fred Lambert, a Tesla owner and technology writer, activated Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) in Standard mode on a 50 km/h urban road in Quebec. Less than two minutes after activation, the vehicle accelerated to 78 km/h, prompting an oncoming police car to detect the speed via radar and pull Lambert over on the spot. Lambert stated he was demonstrating the system to two passengers unfamiliar with FSD when the vehicle’s speed exceeded local enforcement tolerance, leading to the violation.
Quebec police typically tolerate speeding up to 10-20 km/h over the limit, but Lambert’s vehicle exceeded the speed limit by 28 km/h, well beyond local enforcement standards. He emphasized that while drivers remain responsible for FSD’s actions and accepted the fine, Tesla’s changes to FSD’s design have increased the risk of violations for drivers.
FSD v14 Removes Custom Speed Offset Feature, Drivers Unable to Adjust Speed Limits
Lambert noted that Tesla removed the custom speed offset feature in the FSD v14 update released in October 2025. This feature previously allowed drivers to set a speed offset above the limit, such as adding 15 km/h to a 50 km/h zone, capping the vehicle’s speed at 65 km/h. Lambert argued that the feature not only helped avoid violations but also allowed drivers to adjust speeds based on road conditions, weather, and local enforcement practices, aligning with real-world driving needs.
With the removal of the custom speed offset in FSD v14, Tesla replaced it with five preset driving modes: Sloth, Chill, Standard, Hurry, and Mad Max. Lambert contended that these modes fail to accommodate individual driver preferences. For example, Standard mode may cruise at 111 km/h on highways, which is reasonable, but in a 50 km/h urban zone, it can accelerate to 78 km/h—far exceeding Quebec’s typical enforcement tolerance. He stated that if Tesla had retained the custom speed offset, he could have set a 15 km/h limit, avoiding the violation.
Lambert further pointed out that Tesla’s FSD system already includes a speed-limiting feature, but it functions only as a warning rather than a hard limit.
