Ford Confirms Compact Electric Pickup for 2027 Launch
Ford Motor Company referred to its upcoming electric pickup as "compact" for the first time in its second-quarter earnings press release earlier this month. The company announced it is upgrading its Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky to prepare for production of an "all-new, affordable four-door compact electric pickup." Ford stated the vehicle will launch in 2027 with a starting price of around $30,000.
The electric pickup will be developed on Ford’s new Universal EV (UEV) Platform, featuring a 400-volt electrical architecture and prismatic lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. Ford emphasized that the vehicle’s interior passenger space will surpass that of a Toyota RAV4, excluding the front trunk or bed. During the earnings call, Ford’s CEO stated the pickup will be more efficient, smarter, and more profitable than its first-generation electric models, including the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E, and claimed its total cost of ownership will be lower than that of a Tesla Model Y.
Native NACS Charging Port as a Key Highlight
Ford confirmed the compact electric pickup will be the company’s first model equipped with a native North American Charging Standard (NACS) port, allowing owners to use Tesla Superchargers without an adapter. The charging port is located on the driver’s side rear, matching Tesla’s vehicle design for convenient parking and charging. Ford stated this will significantly enhance charging convenience and improve the electric vehicle ownership experience.
Prototype images captured recently in Long Beach, California, show the pickup undergoing real-world testing. Ford has not yet released detailed battery specifications or range data, but industry expectations suggest the vehicle will achieve at least 300 miles (approximately 480 kilometers) of range on a single charge. Ford highlighted that the vehicle will feature a more efficient battery management system to optimize energy utilization.
Louisville Assembly Plant Upgraded for Production
Ford is upgrading its Louisville Assembly Plant in Kentucky to meet production demands for the compact electric pickup. The plant is currently phasing out models such as the Escape and Lincoln Corsair to free up assembly line space for the new vehicle. Ford stated the upgrades will improve production efficiency and ensure the pickup launches on schedule in 2027.
Ford continues to expand its presence in the electric vehicle market, and the introduction of this compact electric pickup will position it to compete with brands like Tesla and Rivian in the affordable electric pickup segment. Currently, comparably priced electric vehicles such as the Chevrolet Bolt and Nissan LEAF are passenger cars, lacking the versatility of a pickup. Ford aims to attract more consumers to electric vehicles with this model and strengthen its competitiveness in the EV market.
However, questions remain about whether Ford’s current dealer sales model can effectively promote electric vehicles. Analysts note that with EV sales yet to reach economies of scale, some dealers may lack incentives to aggressively market them, potentially perpetuating the cumbersome negotiation processes associated with traditional internal combustion vehicles and impacting the consumer purchasing experience. Ford has not yet announced specific plans to address this challenge.
