Sweden Deploys World’s Largest Underground Battery-Electric Mining Trucks with 120-Tonne Capacity

Swedish mining company LKAB has deployed two 120-tonne battery-electric mining trucks 1,250 metres underground at its Malmberget iron ore mine, setting a new global record for underground electric transport with a single-charge capacity of 3,200 tonnes of iron ore.

World’s First 120-Tonne Underground Battery-Electric Mining Trucks

Swedish mining company LKAB has officially commissioned two 120-tonne battery-electric mining trucks 1,250 metres underground at its Malmberget iron ore mine in the Arctic Circle. These trucks, customised by Scania as semi-trailer electric tippers, each have a payload capacity exceeding 70 tonnes and are equipped with 624 kWh battery packs. Since their trial operation began late last year, the trucks have completed approximately 1,500 round trips, transporting over 100,000 tonnes of iron ore.

Peter Gustavsson, LKAB’s electrification project manager, stated that these two trucks are believed to be the world’s largest and heaviest underground battery-electric mining trucks, specifically designed for the harsh conditions of underground mining. The trucks transport iron ore from ore passes to crushers, operating entirely 1,250 metres underground. Each charge allows for around seven hours of operation, with an 80-minute charging time at 375 kW. A single charge enables approximately 45 round trips, moving 3,200 tonnes of material.

Underground Constant-Temperature Environment an Advantage for Electric Vehicles

Pär Sundqvist, LKAB’s electrification engineer, noted that the underground mining environment is highly favourable for electric vehicles. The temperature in the mine remains stable at 12 to 15 degrees Celsius year-round, and the roads are level with predictable routes, significantly reducing challenges related to battery cooling and range. Compared to surface operations, the constant-temperature conditions underground help extend battery life and improve operational efficiency.

Gustavsson further explained that the trucks have demonstrated the potential to replace diesel equivalents in production duties. LKAB plans to operate one of the battery-electric trucks 24/7 in the near future to verify its reliability in a round-the-clock production environment. He emphasised that the advantages of electric vehicles in maintenance and energy consumption are becoming increasingly apparent, and the mine’s charging infrastructure is already in place, laying the foundation for expanding the electric fleet.

Mining Electrification Achieves New Milestone

LKAB began using Scania’s 25P XT electric heavy tippers for surface transport as early as 2022, but the two semi-trailer electric trucks recently deployed are specifically tailored for underground production. Gustavsson stated that this project not only demonstrates the feasibility of electric vehicles in extreme environments but also sets a new benchmark for global mining electrification. With continuous advancements in battery technology and charging equipment, underground mines are poised to become a key application area for electric vehicles, further driving the low-carbon transformation of heavy industry.

LKAB has not yet disclosed a cost comparison between battery-electric and diesel trucks, but Gustavsson revealed that electric vehicles have made significant progress in operational efficiency and environmental adaptability. The electric fleet in the mine not only reduces carbon emissions but also enhances transport efficiency, opening new possibilities for sustainable mining development.
