Scotland's Electric Intercity Coaches Surpass 120 Million Kilometres, Ember Becomes UK's First All-Electric Intercity Operator

Ember operates over 100 Yutong electric coaches, completing 120 million kilometres of zero-emission travel across Scotland’s Highlands and harsh winter conditions. The latest Scottish Government funding programme will invest £53.8 million to accelerate public transport electrification.

Six-Year Expansion to 100-Vehicle Fleet, Carrying 1.5 Million Passengers

Scottish electric intercity coach operator Ember announced that, over the year to January 2026, its fleet of over 100 Yutong electric coaches completed 120 million kilometres of zero-emission travel, carrying more than 1.5 million passengers. Ember launched the UK’s first all-electric intercity coach service in October 2020 with two electric coaches operating between Edinburgh and Dundee. Six years later, the fleet has expanded to over 100 vehicles, covering major cities including Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen, Inverness, Fort William, Oban, and Thurso, and extending into remote Highland areas.

Ember’s operational model centres on high-frequency charging and precise scheduling, with vehicles capable of covering nearly 200,000 miles annually. The company has established charging facilities in Dundee, Aberdeen, Inverness, Oban, Thurso, Fort William, and Perth, with individual chargers delivering up to 300 kW. The charging network continues to expand. Some routes offer overnight and round-the-clock services, with an operational model closer to regional rail than traditional long-distance coach services.

Highland Terrain and Harsh Winters Test Electric Coach Performance

Ember’s route network must overcome the challenges of Scotland’s rugged Highland terrain and severe winter conditions. For example, the route from Edinburgh to Fort William passes through Loch Earnhead, Tyndrum, and Glencoe, requiring fully loaded vehicles to repeatedly climb steep gradients, consuming significantly more energy than on flat terrain. Scotland’s low winter temperatures and prolonged cabin heating further reduce available battery capacity. While regenerative braking recovers some energy on downhill sections, it cannot fully offset the energy demands imposed by the terrain.

Ember states that its Yutong electric coaches can travel up to approximately 350 miles on a single charge. However, in daily operations, vehicles require multiple charges to maintain high mileage utilisation. The company optimises journeys through a booking system and dynamic scheduling, with most intermediate stops requiring only ten minutes’ advance notice. If no passengers board or alight, vehicles can bypass stops, avoiding unnecessary detours and time loss. This approach ensures charging plans align closely with timetables, maintaining operational efficiency.

European Manufacturers Absent, Chinese Coaches Fill Market Gap

Ember’s electric coach procurement process highlights the absence of suitable long-distance electric models from European manufacturers. Lothian, Edinburgh’s public transport operator, primarily sources electric buses from Volvo and Wrightbus. However, when Ember initially approached Scotland’s Alexander Dennis for electric coaches, the manufacturer indicated no suitable product was available or planned. Ember ultimately turned to Chinese manufacturer Yutong, which not only provided ready-made models but also collaborated with Ember to refine the product.

Scotland’s latest zero-emission bus funding round will invest £53.8 million, comprising £13.2 million in public funding and £40.6 million in private investment. Ember will receive funding for 100 Yutong electric coaches and 43 chargers, matching the scale of its existing fleet. The same funding round includes 60 electric double-deckers for Lothian and 44 zero-emission vehicles for Stagecoach East Scotland.

Differing Paths to Electrification for Urban Buses and Long-Distance Coaches

Compared to urban buses, long-distance coach electrification faces more complex charging and scheduling challenges. Operators like Lothian can gradually replace existing fleets and install charging infrastructure along fixed routes and at depots. Ember, however, started from scratch, designing its entire operational network around electrification. Analysts note that this “electric-native” model is better suited to long-distance coaching, as routes are fixed, mileage is predictable, and software and charging networks can optimise vehicle utilisation.

Stagecoach East Scotland currently operates only 41 electric vehicles out of a fleet of 477, representing approximately 9%, indicating that regional operators lag behind urban bus services in electrification. Ember’s success demonstrates that large-scale zero-emission operations are achievable for long-distance coaching when the entire service is designed with electrification as a foundation. Lothian now has around one in five buses as electric, primarily concentrated in Edinburgh, reflecting significant progress in urban bus electrification.

Ember’s operational model provides a new template for Scotland’s public transport electrification. With the advancement of government funding programmes, more electric long-distance coach routes are expected to launch in the coming years, further driving Scotland towards its zero-emission transport goals.
