Schneider Electric Launches Smart Home EV Charger Supporting Level 2 Charging with Existing Electrical Capacity

Schneider Electric introduced the Schneider Charge home Level 2 electric vehicle charger in the US and Canada on August 25. The charger features built-in SmartAmp dynamic load management technology, allowing homeowners to install high-power charging equipment without upgrading their electrical systems, delivering an output of 11.5 kW.

Built-in Dynamic Load Management Simplifies Installation

Schneider Electric launched the Schneider Charge home Level 2 electric vehicle charger in the US and Canada on August 25. The charger’s standout feature is its built-in SmartAmp dynamic load management technology, which monitors household electricity usage in real time and automatically adjusts charging power. This enables homes to support high-power charging within their existing electrical capacity without the need for additional upgrades to electrical meters or distribution panels.

Shawn Bonacorsi, Head of Electrification Solutions at Schneider Electric North America, stated that as electric vehicles become more widespread, many households are discovering that their existing electrical systems cannot handle the demand for high-power charging. This often requires costly upgrades to electrical services or panels when installing a Level 2 charger. Schneider Charge addresses this issue through SmartAmp technology, which maximizes charging efficiency without the need for external monitoring devices or additional system components, ensuring other household appliances operate normally while optimizing charging speed.

Bonacorsi emphasized that the design goal of this charger is to lower the installation barrier, making it easier for more households to adopt high-efficiency charging equipment. Schneider Electric noted that many older homes lack the electrical capacity to support high-power applications like EV charging. Traditional Level 2 charger installations often require expensive and time-consuming upgrades to electrical services or panels. Schneider Charge resolves this challenge through real-time monitoring and dynamic adjustment.

Product Specifications Meet North American Market Demands

The Schneider Charge delivers a charging output of 11.5 kW (48 amperes) and comes with a 25-foot charging cable. It supports both NACS (J3400) and J1772 connectors, covering vehicle models from brands such as Tesla, Ford, and General Motors. The product complies with the OCPP 1.6 communication protocol and UL 3141 safety standard, and it supports managed-load installation modes to ensure compatibility with existing electrical systems.

Currently, the Schneider Charge is available only in a hardwired version for permanent installation. Schneider Electric plans to release a plug-in version in early 2027. To assist customers with installation, Schneider Electric has partnered with Qmerit, a leading electrification installation service provider in North America, to offer professional installation support.

Schneider Electric has not disclosed the specific pricing for the Schneider Charge or provided comparative performance or cost data relative to other residential EV chargers on the market. However, its built-in load management capabilities and high-power output make it an ideal choice for homeowners in older residences. As the adoption of electric vehicles continues to rise, the demand for home charging equipment is growing. Schneider Electric’s solution is expected to accelerate the deployment of residential charging infrastructure.

The Schneider Charge is now available in the US and Canada, though Schneider Electric has not indicated whether there are plans to expand to other regions. The 25-foot charging cable offers ample flexibility, making it suitable for various residential parking configurations and enhancing user convenience.
