Overhead Charging System Breaks Traditional Limitations
Portland International Airport has recently completed the installation of the first overhead DC fast-charging station in the United States, designed exclusively for car rental operators. Located in the airport’s Quick Turnaround (QTA) Facility, the project was developed by ChargePoint and includes 10 dual-port fast chargers, enabling up to 20 electric vehicles to charge simultaneously. The facility is expected to significantly reduce vehicle turnaround time for rental companies.
ChargePoint stated that the overhead charging system, equipped with retractable cable management, effectively resolves the long-standing trade-off between space utilization and installation costs associated with traditional ground-mounted chargers. By elevating the charging equipment, the design not only conserves valuable ground space but also simplifies the installation process and mitigates the risk of vehicle collisions damaging the infrastructure. Rick Wilmer, CEO of ChargePoint, noted that airports are redefining the deployment of electric vehicle infrastructure. He added that the Port of Portland’s investment demonstrates how high-power charging systems can be seamlessly integrated into existing parking facilities without compromising space for equipment placement.
Jeremiah Hartley, Rental Car Manager at Portland International Airport, further explained that the overhead system reduces installation costs by minimizing the need for conduit and wiring. It also protects against potential damage from vehicles operating in the QTA area. The design is particularly well-suited for high-traffic rental car facilities, maximizing charging efficiency within limited space and enhancing overall operational flexibility.
Smart Software Optimizes Fleet Management
ChargePoint has also deployed fleet management software tailored for rental car operators, providing real-time visibility and control over charging operations. The system enables remote monitoring, troubleshooting, and intelligent charging management, allowing operators to adjust charging schedules based on operational demands. The software supports integration across multiple vehicle types and charging stations, helping rental companies balance vehicle dispatch and energy distribution while reducing operational costs.
The charging facility at Portland International Airport not only showcases an innovative breakthrough in U.S. airport electric vehicle infrastructure but also offers a viable solution for other airports and high-density parking environments. As rental car companies continue to expand their electric vehicle fleets, demand for airport charging stations is expected to grow. ChargePoint emphasized that the system has been optimized for rapid turnaround needs. While the specific power output of the chargers has not been disclosed, the overall design has been carefully tailored to meet the practical operational requirements of rental car companies.
