New EV Charging Option in North America: Octopus Charge Officially Launches
Octopus Energy’s Octopus Charge app officially launched in North America on August 20, integrating over 200,000 electric vehicle (EV) chargers across more than 10,000 charging stations in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The app aims to simplify the EV charging process, allowing drivers to access real-time status, speed, compatibility, and pricing of chargers without switching between multiple brand-specific applications.
Sebastian Blake, Head of Product at Octopus Energy US, stated that the development of Octopus Charge was intended to eliminate unnecessary friction in the charging experience. He said, "We built Octopus Charge to remove unnecessary friction from the charging experience, helping drivers spend less time managing charging and more time enjoying the drive."
Cross-Network Payments Without Markups: High Price Transparency
One of Octopus Charge’s key features is its price transparency. The app directly passes through the original pricing of charging networks without adding any markup on energy costs. For example, if a charging stall’s energy price is $0.50 per kilowatt-hour, the app will display the same price. Additionally, users can set up a single payment method within the app to pay across all supported networks, making it particularly convenient for long-distance travel.
The app also provides real-time availability, charging speed, vehicle compatibility, and information on nearby amenities. Users can input their car’s make and model, and the app will automatically filter the most suitable charging settings, ensuring a smooth charging process. Octopus Charge is currently available for iOS and Android devices and supports all EV models, contrasting with General Motors’ apps, which are limited to GM-branded vehicles.
Major Charging Networks Absent: Integration Progress Remains Key
While Octopus Charge has integrated over 20 charging network partners, including EVgo, ChargePoint, Blink, Shell Recharge, Circle K, and Red E, major North American networks such as Tesla Superchargers, Ionna, and Electrify America are not yet included. This means users will still need to rely on other apps or credit cards when using these networks.
Octopus Energy has offered similar services in Europe and other regions for several years, but its integration progress in the North American market remains to be seen. The company has not disclosed a specific timeline for incorporating networks like Tesla but has stated it will continue expanding its partnerships. Industry analysts note that the ability to integrate more large-scale charging networks will directly impact Octopus Charge’s adoption and practicality.
As the EV market continues to grow, the integration and convenience of charging infrastructure have become focal points for drivers. The launch of Octopus Charge provides North American EV users with a new option, but whether it can effectively address the fragmentation of charging networks will require time to verify. The app’s ability to attract more charging networks in the future will be crucial to its success.
