As cities worldwide face mounting pressures from traffic congestion and decarbonization, waterway transport has long been recognized as an efficient and sustainable alternative. However, its development has been hindered by a lack of integrated planning across vessels, charging infrastructure, and operational routes. To address the disconnect between concept and deployment in electric ferry projects, marine fast-charging infrastructure provider Aqua superPower and electric passenger ferry developer Hyke signed a memorandum of understanding on August 20, 2026. The collaboration aims to create a standardized blueprint for electrified urban ferry networks, assisting ferry operators, transport authorities, ports, and city planners in synchronizing vessel procurement, charging infrastructure development, and route planning from the outset to avoid implementation barriers caused by independent development of each component.

Aqua superPower and Hyke noted in the memorandum that urban waterway transport resources remain largely underutilized. Electric ferries can provide clean, efficient passenger transport while alleviating pressure on roads and existing public transit systems. Aqua superPower specializes in marine fast-charging infrastructure and has established dedicated charging stations for electric vessels at multiple ports and marinas globally. Hyke, meanwhile, develops electric passenger ferries designed for urban, inland, and protected waterways. The partnership seeks to deliver more sustainable solutions for urban mobility while highlighting the untapped potential of waterways as a transportation asset.

Experts Emphasize Integrated Planning as Key to Electric Ferry Success

Niels Astrup, Business Development Manager for the Nordics at Aqua superPower, stated on August 20, 2026, that many cities possess underdeveloped waterway transport assets. The expansion of electric ferries is not merely a technical challenge but requires holistic planning from the perspective of the broader transportation ecosystem. He emphasized that electric ferries have the potential to offer clean, efficient, and attractive passenger transport while reducing strain on roads and existing public transit systems. Astrup stressed that successful electric ferry services must treat vessels, charging infrastructure, and operational requirements as an integrated whole, with comprehensive consideration from the planning stage to avoid project delays caused by disjointed development.

Charles Pembroke-Birss, Vice President of Sales at Hyke, further explained that electric ferry projects often struggle to transition from concept to deployment due to the independent development of vessel procurement, charging infrastructure, and route planning. He noted that customers require not just high-performance vessels but a complete solution ensuring seamless integration of vessels, charging infrastructure, and operational needs from the beginning. Pembroke-Birss highlighted that the collaboration with Aqua superPower will combine expertise in vessel design and marine charging to provide cities and operators with a clearer and more reliable pathway for developing zero-emission ferry services.

Collaboration Focuses on Integrated Solutions

The signing of the memorandum of understanding marks a critical step toward systemic integration in the electric ferry industry. Aqua superPower and Hyke emphasized that their collaboration will address common obstacles in electric ferry projects, including infrastructure, vessel performance, and operational coordination, through an integrated planning model. Aqua superPower’s existing network of charging stations spans multiple ports and marinas, while Hyke’s electric passenger ferries are specifically designed for short-distance urban waterways. Together, they aim to offer cities more flexible and sustainable transport options.

While the partners have not yet disclosed a specific timeline or priority cities for implementing the blueprint, the core objective is to provide a viable integrated solution to ensure electric ferry routes can transition smoothly from concept to operation. Both Astrup and Pembroke-Birss stated that the successful deployment of electric ferry networks will help accelerate the transformation of waterway transport’s role in urban mobility, offering new solutions for global cities to reduce emissions and optimize transportation. This collaboration not only provides ferry operators and city planners with a clear development direction but also lays the foundation for the future growth of the electric ferry industry.
