To address the disconnect between concept and deployment in electric ferry projects, marine fast-charging infrastructure provider Aqua superPower and electric passenger ferry developer Hyke signed a memorandum of understanding on August 20, 2026. The collaboration aims to create a standardized blueprint for electrified urban ferry networks, assisting ferry operators, transport authorities, ports, and city planners in synchronizing vessel procurement, charging infrastructure development, and route planning from the outset to avoid implementation barriers caused by independent development of each component.
Aqua superPower and Hyke noted in the memorandum that urban waterway transport resources remain largely underutilized. Electric ferries can provide clean, efficient passenger transport while alleviating pressure on roads and existing public transit systems. Aqua superPower specializes in marine fast-charging infrastructure and has established dedicated charging stations for electric vessels at multiple ports and marinas globally. Hyke, meanwhile, develops electric passenger ferries designed for urban, inland, and protected waterways. The partnership seeks to deliver more sustainable solutions for urban mobility while highlighting the untapped potential of waterways as a transportation asset.

Niels Astrup, Business Development Manager for the Nordics at Aqua superPower, stated on August 20, 2026, that many cities possess underdeveloped waterway transport assets. The expansion of electric ferries is not merely a technical challenge but requires holistic planning from the perspective of the broader transportation ecosystem. He emphasized that electric ferries have the potential to offer clean, efficient, and attractive passenger transport while reducing strain on roads and existing public transit systems. Astrup stressed that successful electric ferry services must treat vessels, charging infrastructure, and operational requirements as an integrated whole, with comprehensive consideration from the planning stage to avoid project delays caused by disjointed development.
