Successful Production of LFP Cathode Material with Target Initial Discharge Performance
Canadian battery materials technology company Nano One Materials announced on August 26 that it has successfully produced lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode active material (CAM) and assembled battery test coin cells using battery-grade lithium carbonate supplied by Standard Lithium from its pilot plant in Southwest Arkansas. Test results showed that the material met predetermined chemical and physical parameters, achieved the intended particle morphology, and delivered an initial discharge performance of 155 milliamp hours per gram (mAh/g).
Nano One utilized its proprietary One-Pot process to convert the lithium carbonate provided by Standard Lithium into LFP cathode material. CEO Alex Holmes stated that this validation is part of a feedstock pre-qualification program aimed at reducing supply chain risks for potential licensees and customers. The process may also shorten the qualification timeline from laboratory to pilot-scale production by as much as one year, depending on customer requirements.
Holmes emphasized that customers and licensing partners are increasingly focused on establishing cathode material production within their own jurisdictions using locally sourced and easily accessible raw materials. Each completed feedstock pre-qualification shortens the path to production and enhances supply chain flexibility. Nano One has collaborated with multiple feedstock suppliers, and this test with Standard Lithium further expands the range of feedstock sourcing options.
Capacity Expansion and Collaboration Progress Targeting Commissioning in First Half of 2027
Nano One plans to expand the annual production capacity of its demonstration facility in Candiac, Canada, to approximately 800 tons. As of July 2026, 85% of the detailed engineering design has been completed, with commissioning expected in the first half of 2027. This test builds on the collaboration that began in July 2025, when Nano One participated as a founding member in the Arkansas Lithium Technology Accelerator (ALTA), an initiative led by Standard Lithium and supported by the Government of Arkansas and local academic institutions.
Standard Lithium’s Southwest Arkansas pilot plant supplied the battery-grade lithium carbonate for this collaboration, while Nano One completed the material production and battery testing at its facility in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. Although Nano One did not disclose the specific volume of LFP cathode material and test cells produced, the company confirmed that the test results validated the compatibility of its One-Pot process with Standard Lithium’s lithium carbonate, laying the foundation for future commercial applications.
The One-Pot process is characterized by its simplified production workflow, cost reduction, and enhanced material stability. The successful conversion of Standard Lithium’s lithium carbonate into high-performance LFP cathode material further strengthens Nano One’s competitive position in battery materials technology. As global demand for LFP batteries continues to grow in electric vehicles and energy storage markets, the localization of cathode material supply chains and diversification of raw material sources have become critical industry priorities. Through pre-qualification collaborations with feedstock suppliers, Nano One aims to provide customers with more flexible production solutions and accelerate the commercialization of battery materials.
