High Energy Density and Rapid Response Tailored for Hybrid Vehicle Market

Battery manufacturer Molicel unveiled its new INR-21700-P70X battery on August 2, the first product in its PX series. The battery boasts a capacity of 7,000 mAh, an energy density of 340 Wh/kg, and supports continuous discharge at 30C. It delivers a peak power of 900 W for 5 seconds, with a response time of just 200 microseconds. Molicel states that this design aims to combine the high energy density of lithium-ion batteries with the rapid response characteristics of supercapacitors, meeting the demands of hybrid vehicles for power output and charge-discharge efficiency.

Molicel President Casey Shiue noted that the P70X battery can provide immediate current output during overtaking and absorb energy during heavy regenerative braking, effectively enhancing the overall performance of hybrid power systems. He emphasized that this technology will redefine what hybrid vehicles can achieve in terms of power, safety, and lifespan.

One Million Cycle Tests Validate Durability with 96% Capacity Retention

Molicel conducted rigorous testing to address the frequent shallow charge-discharge demands of hybrid vehicles. Under simulated real-world usage conditions, the P70X battery was tested with a cycle mode of +10C charging for 10 seconds and -2C discharging for 110 seconds, with a protection mechanism activated at 83°C. After one million cycles, the battery retained 96% of its capacity, demonstrating exceptional durability.

Market data shows that in 2025, hybrid vehicles accounted for 20% of new vehicle sales in the US, while in Europe, the figure reached 24%. As demand for hybrid vehicles continues to grow, the requirements for battery performance are also increasing. Molicel states that the P70X battery is designed to effectively meet the hybrid power system's needs for high power output and rapid charge-discharge capabilities.

Enhanced Safety Performance with Nearly 50% Reduction in Thermal Runaway Risk

In terms of safety, Molicel claims that the P70X battery has passed the UL9540A thermal runaway evaluation. The battery uses single-crystal materials instead of traditional polycrystalline materials, reducing exothermic heat release by nearly 50%. Molicel states that when thermal runaway occurs, the battery produces smoke rather than exploding instantly, effectively delaying and isolating thermal spread to reduce safety risks.

Additionally, the rapid response characteristics of the P70X battery make it suitable for applications such as data center battery backup units (BBUs). However, there is currently no third-party verification of the battery's long-term performance in real-world vehicle applications, nor has comparative performance data with existing hybrid vehicle batteries been released. Molicel has also not disclosed details regarding partner automakers, production timelines, or pricing.

While the P70X battery has demonstrated outstanding performance in laboratory tests, its durability, cost-effectiveness, and long-term stability in real-world road conditions still require further validation. As the global hybrid vehicle market continues to expand, whether the P70X battery can become a mainstream solution will depend on its subsequent real-world application performance and market acceptance.
