2027 Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback to Debut in North America with Dual Charging Ports as Standard

Dual Charging Ports as Standard Equipment

Mitsubishi Motors has announced that the 2027 Mitsubishi Eclipse Sportback, scheduled for launch in North America in fall 2026, will be the first mass-produced vehicle to come standard with both J1772 and NACS (SAE J3400) charging ports across its entire lineup. This design allows owners to use existing J1772 home or portable chargers for Level 1 or Level 2 AC charging while also connecting to fast-charging networks like Tesla Superchargers via the NACS port for DC fast charging at up to 150 kW.

Mitsubishi stated that this approach aims to address compatibility issues consumers face during the transition of electric vehicle charging standards. Currently, most new electric vehicles in the North American market are equipped only with NACS ports, requiring owners to purchase adapters if they need to use J1772 home chargers. The Eclipse Sportback’s dual-port design eliminates this inconvenience, allowing owners to seamlessly use both charging standards without replacing existing equipment.

Charging Performance and Market Impact

According to specifications, the 2027 Eclipse Sportback’s J1772 port will support Level 1 (120 volts) and Level 2 (240 volts) AC charging, suitable for home or public charging stations. The NACS port will enable DC fast charging at up to 150 kW, capable of adding approximately 300 kilometers of range in about 30 minutes. The NACS standard, originally Tesla’s proprietary charging specification, was standardized by SAE International as SAE J3400 in 2023 and has since been adopted by multiple automakers, becoming one of the dominant trends in North American EV charging.

Analysts suggest that Mitsubishi’s dual-port design may offer greater flexibility for consumers. For owners who have already installed J1772 home chargers, there is no need for additional investment to use the new vehicle, while still benefiting from the convenience of the NACS fast-charging network. It remains unclear whether this strategy will influence other automakers’ charging port configurations, but it demonstrates the diverse approaches car manufacturers are taking during the transition of charging standards.

Mitsubishi has not yet released full specifications for the 2027 Eclipse Sportback, including range, pricing, and powertrain details. The model is expected to officially launch in the North American market in fall 2026, becoming the first mass-produced electric vehicle to support both J1772 and NACS charging standards simultaneously.
