Magna Partners with Chery to Mass Produce 800 V Two-Speed eDrive System in Wuhu, Ushering in a New Era for High-Voltage EVs in China

Canadian automotive supplier Magna has partnered with Chinese automaker Chery to mass produce an 800 V two-speed electric drive system at its new facility in Wuhu, Anhui. The system, rated at 250 kW, marks a significant breakthrough in the localized production of 800 V high-voltage EV technology in China. Diba Ilunga, President of Magna Powertrain, stated that this collaboration will help automakers accelerate their electrification transition.

Local Production of 800 V eDrive System Officially Launches

Canadian automotive supplier Magna has announced a contract with Chinese automaker Chery to mass produce an 800 V two-speed electric drive system at its newly established production base in Wuhu, Anhui. The system, with a maximum power output of 250 kW, is scheduled to enter production by the end of July 2026 and will be Magna’s first locally produced 800 V high-voltage eDrive system in China.

Diba Ilunga, President of Magna Powertrain, stated, "This new 800 V eDrive collaboration with Chery demonstrates how we support OEMs in advancing their electrification transition. This is not only a technological breakthrough but also a significant milestone for localized production."

Advanced Technology Enhances Performance and Charging Efficiency

The 800 V eDrive system is designed using Magna’s modular electrification platform, integrating the electric motor, inverter, and two-speed gearbox into a compact, high-power-density structure. Compared to traditional 400 V systems, the 800 V architecture effectively reduces resistive losses and allows for lighter conductors and smaller cooling components, further improving overall vehicle energy efficiency.

Magna noted that the system’s inverter will use silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors instead of traditional silicon-based IGBTs to meet higher voltage demands. SiC components operate at higher voltages with lower switching losses, enhancing overall system performance. Additionally, the two-speed gearbox design enables the motor to use a shorter gear ratio at low speeds, improving launch and hill-climbing performance, while switching to a longer gear ratio at high speeds optimizes highway cruising efficiency. This resolves the trade-off between power and efficiency inherent in single-speed reducers.

In terms of charging efficiency, the 800 V system theoretically supports faster DC fast charging, as charging power is directly proportional to voltage. This technology is expected to shorten charging times, improve the convenience of electric vehicle use, and further drive the development of the EV market.

Deepening Partnership to Expand Global Market Reach

Magna and Chery have a long-standing collaboration. Magna’s DHD Duo dedicated hybrid drive system has already entered series production on Chery’s Jetour G700 model, and this new 800 V eDrive contract further strengthens their partnership. For Chery, adopting the 800 V platform will enhance product competitiveness, particularly in range and charging efficiency, providing stronger power support for its high-end electric vehicle models.

While specific vehicle models set to adopt the 800 V eDrive system have not yet been announced, industry expectations suggest it may first be applied to Chery’s premium electric vehicle lineup. Through this collaboration, Magna is reinforcing its localized production capabilities in the Chinese market while laying the groundwork for future global platform integration. Although the timeline for the Wuhu plant’s production launch and capacity planning has not been disclosed, this partnership is already seen as a key milestone for the localization of 800 V technology in China.

As demand for high-voltage platforms in the electric vehicle market continues to grow, the Magna-Chery collaboration model may serve as a benchmark for other automakers and suppliers. This partnership not only highlights Magna’s leadership in electrification technology but also injects new momentum into the development of China’s electric vehicle industry.
