Ford Recalls 86,543 Mustang Mach-E EVs Over Loose Rear Window Trim Risk

Ford Motor Company announced on August 3 that it will recall 86,543 Mustang Mach-E electric SUVs in the United States. The recall addresses a defect where the rear side quarter window trim may become improperly secured and detach while the vehicle is in motion, potentially striking other vehicles and increasing the risk of a crash. The recall covers 2023, 2024, and 2025 model-year Mustang Mach-E vehicles produced between February 17, 2023, and October 8, 2024.

Process Change at Supplier Led to Insufficient Adhesive Curing, Issue Now Resolved

Ford identified the root cause of the recall as a new assembly jig introduced at the supplier’s factory, Saint-Gobain Mexico, in February 2023. While the jig improved production efficiency, it reduced the installation time for the rear side quarter window trim, preventing the adhesive primer from curing properly. This resulted in insufficient bonding strength between the trim and the window glass. Official documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirm that the shortened installation time led to inadequate adhesive curing, which is the primary cause of the trim detachment.

Ford began receiving reports from owners in May 2024 regarding loose or detached rear side quarter window trim on 2023 to 2025 model-year Mustang Mach-E vehicles. As of the recall announcement, Ford had received 219 such reports but stated it was not aware of any accidents or injuries related to this defect. Saint-Gobain Mexico addressed the issue in September 2024 by implementing a 30-second timer on the assembly jig to ensure the adhesive had sufficient time to cure, resolving the bonding failure.

Dealers to Inspect and Replace Trim Free of Charge, Recall Limited to Mustang Mach-E

Ford and Lincoln dealerships will inspect and replace the rear side quarter window trim on the recalled vehicles at no cost to owners. Ford has not yet announced a timeline for notifying affected owners but confirmed it will communicate through official channels. The recall is limited to the Mustang Mach-E and does not affect other Ford or Lincoln models.

The Mustang Mach-E is a key electric vehicle in Ford’s U.S. lineup, and this recall highlights the quality control challenges faced during its early mass production. Ford stated it will continue working with suppliers to strengthen process management and prevent similar issues in the future. Owners can check whether their vehicle is included in the recall and schedule a free inspection through Ford’s official channels or authorized dealerships.

This is not the first time the Mustang Mach-E has been recalled for a parts-related safety issue. Earlier this year, Ford recalled approximately 43,000 units of the same model due to a potential fatigue fracture in the rear differential pinion shaft, which could cause unusual noises or render the vehicle inoperable. That recall affected 2021 to 2023 model-year rear-wheel-drive vehicles and partially overlapped with the current recall, though the causes and affected components are entirely distinct.
