Philippine logistics leader JRS Express and electric motorcycle startup Voltai finalized a partnership agreement in March 2026 to advance battery-swapping technology in commercial logistics operations. Starting July 16, 2026, the two companies began real-world testing in Metro Manila, targeting last-mile delivery segments by replacing traditional fuel-powered vehicles with electric motorcycles to address high fuel costs and maintenance pressures.
John Paul Claparols, vice president of JRS Express, reported that initial pilot results show the battery-swapping system operates smoothly, with delivery riders providing positive feedback on the new equipment’s performance. He emphasized that this collaboration not only improves operational efficiency but also demonstrates the company’s dual commitment to environmental responsibility and innovation.
15 Battery-Swapping Stations Cover Metro Manila, Enabling One-Minute Battery Replacements
Voltai currently operates 15 battery-swapping stations across Metro Manila, forming the largest dedicated two-wheel electric vehicle (EV) swap network in the Philippines. These stations are strategically located at Cleanfuel gas stations and MyTown co-living spaces, ensuring delivery riders can quickly replenish power along their routes. Voltai’s AP01 electric motorcycle is equipped with dual battery modules, offering a combined operational range of 140 kilometers, sufficient to meet high-intensity urban delivery demands. When batteries are depleted, riders can enter a swap station and replace them in under one minute, immediately resuming operations and avoiding downtime losses from prolonged charging.
Fazlur Abdul Rahman, CEO of Voltai, noted that commercial fleets operate on predictable duty cycles, allowing swap stations to charge at steady power levels during off-peak hours and avoid sudden high loads on the grid. He stated that this model not only reduces operational costs but also provides fleet managers with greater flexibility. Voltai’s subscription-based business model offers electric motorcycle and battery leasing services, easing the upfront investment burden for operators. Additionally, Voltai’s proprietary mobile application enables fleet managers to monitor vehicle locations, battery health, and usage in real time, further optimizing dispatch efficiency.
Business Model Targets Fleet Pain Points, Smart Management Enhances Efficiency
Fazlur Abdul Rahman emphasized that Voltai’s business-to-business (B2B) model is specifically designed to address fleet operational challenges, effectively reducing downtime, frequent maintenance, and fuel costs. He stated, “This pilot program marks a critical step toward fleet electrification in the Philippines, aiming to create smarter, cleaner, and more cost-effective transportation solutions.”
Carlos Aboitiz, chairman of Voltai, highlighted that the pilot partnership seeks to enhance energy security, affordability, and sustainability, setting a benchmark for the electrification of commercial transportation in the Philippines. Compared to four-wheel EVs, two-wheel electric fleets are easier to manage, with swap stations charging during off-peak hours to effectively balance grid load.
The partners have not yet disclosed the total number of AP01 electric motorcycles deployed in the pilot phase or a definitive timeline for full commercialization. This collaboration is seen as a pivotal advancement in the electrification of last-mile delivery in the Philippines, opening new opportunities for sustainable commercial logistics.
