Public Charging Experience Improves Across the Board, Satisfaction Reaches New High

The 2026 U.S. Electric Vehicle Experience (EVX) Public Charging Study released by JD Power shows that overall satisfaction among U.S. electric vehicle (EV) drivers with public charging stations continues to rise. Satisfaction with DC fast chargers increased by 12 points compared to the previous year, reaching 666 on a 1,000-point scale—the highest score recorded since the study's inception. The study also found that the charging failure rate dropped to 12%, down from 14% the previous year, marking the lowest rate in the study's history.

The study evaluated 10 key metrics, all of which showed improvement in 2026. Charger availability saw the largest increase, rising by 27 points, indicating that the growth in charging stations and reduced failure rates have significantly enhanced the user experience. Additionally, satisfaction with charging location safety and charging costs improved by 18 points each, reflecting advancements in both the hardware and service quality of charging infrastructure.

Charging Station Locations Impact Satisfaction, Hotels Lead in Performance

The study further analyzed user satisfaction across different charging station locations, revealing that DC fast chargers at hotels achieved the highest satisfaction score of 692. This was followed by gas stations and convenience stores (689) and restaurants (688). In contrast, dealership charging stations scored only 570, significantly lower than other locations, highlighting room for improvement in the quality of charging services provided by dealerships.

EV drivers widely reported that the increase in charging station availability and simplified payment processes were the primary reasons for the recent improvements in their charging experience. The study noted that enhanced charger availability not only reduced the failure rate but also boosted user confidence in public charging. However, the study did not establish a direct causal relationship between the increase in charging stations and the rise in satisfaction.

OEM-Backed Charging Networks Drive Improvements, IONNA Tops Rankings in Debut

The 2026 study included several OEM-backed DC fast charging networks for the first time, with the IONNA charging network earning the highest rating in its debut evaluation. The study found that automakers' direct involvement in charging network development has improved charger reliability and streamlined the user experience for EV owners, further advancing the public charging experience.

Respondents praised the convenience, speed, and availability of OEM-backed charging networks. The study highlighted that the rapid expansion of these networks reflects automakers' growing commitment to charging infrastructure, offering EV drivers a more diverse range of charging options. As automakers continue to increase their investments, the availability and service quality of charging networks are expected to improve further.

Despite the overall positive trends indicating that public charging is maturing, the study emphasized that continued improvement in charging infrastructure will require collaborative efforts from charging station operators, automakers, and government agencies. Enhancing the reliability and convenience of charging stations will remain a critical focus for the future development of the EV industry.
