Videos circulating online appear to show the gunman firing at a Tesla that was plugged in and charging, highlighting potential safety risks for electric vehicles during charging.
When an electric vehicle is charging, the charging gun automatically locks into the vehicle’s charging port to prevent arcing when high-voltage current is interrupted, ensuring charging safety. This design complies with mainstream standards such as the North American Charging Standard (NACS), Combined Charging System (CCS), and J1772. However, it also becomes an obstacle in emergencies. Tesla owners must unlock the charging gun via the in-car screen or a manual release button, a process that can take several seconds. In a sudden violent incident, this brief delay could pose a fatal risk.
EVject Escape Connector Becomes Hot Topic on Social Media, Tesla Previously Sued Over Overheating Risks
Following the shooting, discussions surged on social media platform X, with many EV owners recommending EVject’s Escape Connector. The product is marketed as allowing drivers to drive away in emergencies without unlocking the charging gun. Priced at $299, the device is installed between the charging gun and the vehicle’s charging port. When the vehicle is forcibly driven away, the connector automatically detaches, enabling a quick escape.
However, EVject’s product has been controversial. In 2024, Tesla filed a lawsuit in a California court, alleging that the connector could reach surface temperatures of up to 100°C after 30 minutes of high-current charging and lacked over-temperature protection, posing a safety hazard. EVject later released an updated version with thermal protection, and Tesla subsequently dropped the lawsuit. Despite this, the legal dispute has raised concerns about the product’s safety.
Experts Question Effectiveness of Third-Party Accessories, Call for Automakers to Integrate Emergency Disconnect Mechanisms
Experts argue that third-party accessories like EVject are not a universal solution. While the device may reduce escape time, it assumes the driver can promptly recognize the danger and react. In sudden, chaotic violent incidents, drivers may have no time to think, let alone execute an escape. Additionally, the charging gun lock mechanism is a common limitation for all electric vehicles during DC fast charging, meaning this issue is not unique to Tesla.
In response to the incident, public opinion has largely agreed that the real solution should come from automakers and charging equipment manufacturers integrating built-in emergency disconnect mechanisms. For Tesla, which controls both vehicle and charging infrastructure technology, it is theoretically possible to design an in-car emergency power-cut system. This system could, with a single command, cut power, unlock the charging gun, and allow the vehicle to drive away. Such a feature could require secondary confirmation or even a small fee to prevent misuse and cover potential equipment damage.
Since the incident, Tesla owners have taken to social media to urge the company to add this feature. Experts believe this is not just Tesla’s responsibility; all electric vehicle manufacturers and charging network operators should consider how to ensure drivers can safely leave charging stations in emergencies.
