Hyundai Debuts Seven-Seater Electric Minivan Neira Concept
Hyundai officially unveiled the Neira Concept, a seven-seater electric minivan, on July 31 at the 2026 Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). The company announced that the model will enter local production in Indonesia by the end of 2026. Hyundai stated that the Neira Concept is designed specifically for Indonesian families, combining spacious interiors and practicality while addressing sustainability needs. However, the automaker has not yet disclosed key specifications such as powertrain and range.
Design Nearly Identical to Kia Carens Clavis EV
The Neira Concept’s exterior and interior design closely resemble the Kia Carens Clavis EV, an electric multi-purpose vehicle launched last year. Both models feature dual 12.3-inch digital instrument clusters and center infotainment screens, along with independent climate control systems. Hyundai has made only minor adjustments to the front and rear bumpers, headlight design, and wheel styling to distinguish the Neira Concept as a distinct brand offering.
Based on the specifications of the Kia Carens Clavis EV, the Neira Concept is expected to offer two battery pack options: 42 kWh and 51.4 kWh. The 42 kWh version is projected to deliver an MIDC range of approximately 251 miles (404 kilometers), while the 51.4 kWh version could reach up to 304 miles (490 kilometers). Both battery options are anticipated to support 100 kW DC fast charging, allowing a recharge from 10% to 80% in about 39 minutes. However, Hyundai has not confirmed whether these specifications will apply to the Neira Concept.
Focused on Indonesian Market; Export Plans Unclear
Hyundai has confirmed that the Neira Concept will be produced at the Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia plant, primarily targeting the local market. Due to import tariffs in the United States, the likelihood of the Neira Concept entering the U.S. market is considered low. Currently, Hyundai’s seven-seater electric minivan offering in the U.S. is the IONIQ 9, manufactured at its plant in Georgia. In Europe and South Korea, the company sells the Staria Electric MPV.
Hyundai has not provided any details regarding potential exports to other markets, such as India. The introduction of the Neira Concept underscores Hyundai’s strategic focus on the Indonesian electric vehicle market, though its expansion to other regions in the near term remains uncertain. The model displayed at the auto show is still a concept version, and final design and feature adjustments for the production model have yet to be confirmed.
Indonesia’s EV Market Emerges as Strategic Priority for Hyundai
The Indonesian government has actively promoted electric vehicle development in recent years, offering various policy incentives to attract international automakers to invest in local manufacturing. Hyundai established its electric vehicle production base in Indonesia as early as 2022, and the planned production of the Neira Concept further solidifies its strategic presence in the market. Analysts note that Indonesia’s large demand for family vehicles, combined with government support, will serve as a significant growth driver for Hyundai’s electric vehicle business.
However, Hyundai has not yet disclosed the production timeline or pricing for the Neira Concept. Market observers are closely watching whether the company will release additional technical details ahead of the official launch. Competition in Indonesia’s electric vehicle market is intensifying, with Chinese and Japanese automakers accelerating their local investments. Whether Hyundai can secure a leading position with the Neira Concept will depend on market response in the coming months.
