Current Model Surpasses 100,000 Units in Sales, 2027 Update to Include NACS Charging
The Chevrolet Equinox EV, launched in the U.S. in late 2023, has sold over 100,000 units to date. The current model entered production in 2024 and is expected to remain in production until 2028. General Motors plans to introduce a minor update in 2027, with the most significant change being the integration of Tesla’s NACS charging port, allowing owners to use Tesla Superchargers without an adapter.
The Equinox EV is one of General Motors’ best-selling electric SUVs in the U.S. market, outperforming competitors like the Nissan Leaf. According to testing reports from Edmunds, the Equinox EV leads rivals in interior space, ride comfort, range, and value for money.
2028 Model to Feature New BEV-N Architecture, Details Remain Undisclosed
General Motors has confirmed that the next-generation Equinox EV will launch in 2028, becoming the first vehicle to use the new BEV-N electric vehicle architecture, replacing the current BEV3 platform. Sources indicate that production of the second-generation Equinox EV is expected to begin in late 2028 or early 2029. The BEV3 platform currently supports multiple General Motors electric models, including the Chevrolet Blazer EV, Cadillac Optiq, Lyriq, Vistiq, and Celestiq, and has also been used for collaborative models like the Honda Prologue and Acura ZDX.
Technical details of the BEV-N architecture have not been disclosed, and General Motors has not revealed specific improvements over the BEV3 platform. However, the company has confirmed it is developing a new vehicle electronics, software, and computing hardware system, expected to debut around 2028. The new system will include a centralized computing architecture and a redesigned electrical system to enhance overall performance and space utilization. This move is seen as a response to competitors like BMW’s Neue Klasse architecture, which integrates key functions through a central computing unit.
Reports suggest that the next-generation Chevrolet Blazer EV may also adopt the BEV-N architecture, though the model has not yet received final production approval. Given the Equinox EV’s strong market performance, General Motors has prioritized its successor to solidify its leading position in the electric SUV segment.
Some EV Programs Delayed, Bolt EV Production to End in 2026
General Motors has recently adjusted some of its electric vehicle development plans. Sources indicate that the next generations of the Silverado EV, Sierra EV, and Hummer EV have been temporarily put on hold, though the company has not officially confirmed this. Meanwhile, production of the affordable Chevrolet Bolt EV will end in June 2026, after just 18 months. The Kansas factory will be retooled to produce the gasoline-powered Buick Envision following the Bolt EV’s discontinuation.
While the second-generation Bolt EV is marketed as an all-new model, it is essentially a major update of the existing vehicle, retaining the original body structure and platform while upgrading to lithium iron phosphate batteries, electric motors, and electrical architecture. It remains unclear whether the next-generation Equinox EV will follow a similar update pattern. General Motors has not publicly responded to inquiries about the specific details of the BEV-N architecture, leaving industry observers to speculate whether the new platform will improve range, charging efficiency, and smart technology capabilities.
