Apple Maps Replaces Native Navigation System with Deep Charging Management Integration
Ford Motor Company has announced that its next-generation electric vehicles will adopt Apple Maps as the built-in navigation system, replacing its previously self-developed software. This integration is achieved through Apple’s MapKit for Automotive SDK, embedding Apple Maps directly into the vehicle’s native user interface. The system will provide cross-screen real-time traffic updates, accident alerts, and turn-by-turn navigation.
Ford highlights that the new system’s most significant advantage lies in its deep integration with electric vehicle charging management. Drivers can directly search for charging stations within the Apple Maps interface, plan routes based on battery range, and set battery preconditioning schedules to avoid reduced charging efficiency in low-temperature environments. Ford states that this approach will address a common issue in current EV navigation systems, where third-party map services, despite their robust functionality, often fail to integrate seamlessly with vehicle charging management systems.
BlueCruise Hands-Free Driving Assist System Upgraded with Precise Road Data
Ford is also leveraging Apple Maps’ road-level data to enhance the next generation of its BlueCruise hands-free driving assist system. The detailed road network information provided by Apple Maps will help BlueCruise more accurately identify complex road segments such as highway on-ramps, off-ramps, and interchanges, improving the reliability of automatic lane changes and speed adjustments. Sources within Ford reveal that the related technology has entered the testing phase and is expected to launch alongside the new electric vehicles.
