Expansion Plan Targets AI Data Center Opportunities
U.S. generator manufacturer Generac has announced plans to invest $250 million by the end of 2027 to expand production capacity across multiple factories in the United States, focusing on the power equipment needs of AI data centers. Generac CEO Aaron Jagdfeld stated that the widespread adoption of AI is driving increased corporate investment in data centers, significantly boosting demand for backup power, cooling equipment, transformers, and related infrastructure.
Generac currently holds $1.6 billion in orders for large generators from AI data centers. As the expansion progresses, the company plans to hire approximately 1,000 new employees, equivalent to 10% of its existing workforce. Jagdfeld noted that while the duration of this data center construction boom remains the market's biggest question, the company remains optimistic about its long-term prospects.
Market Size Projected to Double Within Five Years
Research firm Wood Mackenzie estimates that the U.S. data center power equipment market will grow from $33 billion in 2025 to $66 billion by 2030, doubling in size within five years. This surge in demand stems not only from the increasing number of data centers but also from the substantial rise in power consumption per data center, driving simultaneous growth in demand for high-power generators, uninterruptible power systems, and power distribution equipment.
Generac stated that orders for AI data center-related equipment constitute a significant portion of its current backlog, covering traditional backup generators as well as integrated solutions with cooling systems and transformers. As the computational demands for AI model training and inference continue to grow, data center power density is rising, which in turn increases the requirements for reliability and efficiency in power generation equipment.
To address the rapidly growing order demand, Generac plans to use the expansion funds to enhance automation in existing factories and may establish new production lines in the United States. The company is also actively expanding into overseas markets, particularly in data center construction hotspots in Europe and Asia, to reduce its dependence on the U.S. market.
Transformation Strategy Gains Market Approval
Generac, previously focused on residential backup generators, has in recent years shifted toward the large-scale power equipment market required by AI data centers. The company emphasized that demand for power equipment from AI data centers has become a key growth driver and will ensure supply chain stability through its expansion plans. Generac also aims to strengthen collaboration with data center operators to provide customized power solutions.
Despite market skepticism about the long-term demand for AI data centers, Generac's stock price has risen by 54% this year, reflecting investor confidence in its transformation strategy. The company stated that it will continue to invest in research and development to meet the demand for high-performance power equipment in data centers and expand its market share in the global data center power equipment sector.
