Dubai VDX Certified as World’s First Commercial eVTOL Vertiport

Dubai VDX vertiport has been officially certified by the United Arab Emirates General Civil Aviation Authority, becoming the world’s first facility designed exclusively for commercial electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. With an annual passenger capacity of 170,000, it will serve as the central hub for Dubai’s Air Taxi Network.

World’s First Commercial eVTOL Vertiport Officially Launches

Dubai VDX vertiport received commercial operation certification from the United Arab Emirates General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) on August 25, becoming the world’s first purpose-built commercial facility designed for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. Developed by Skyports Infrastructure, the vertiport will serve as the inaugural operational hub for Dubai’s Air Taxi Network, marking a significant milestone in the commercialization of urban air mobility.

Facility Scale and Technical Specifications

Spanning 3,100 square meters, the VDX vertiport features two dedicated eVTOL pads and direct current (DC) fast-charging infrastructure to support rapid charging and turnaround for electric aircraft. Designed to accommodate up to 170,000 passengers annually, the facility will function as the primary transit hub for Dubai’s Air Taxi Network. Duncan Walker, CEO of Skyports Infrastructure, stated that the certification demonstrates the maturity of infrastructure and operational standards required for commercial eVTOL services, setting a new benchmark for advanced air mobility globally.

Skyports Infrastructure is currently collaborating with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) to develop the Air Taxi Network, with three additional vertiports under construction. Walker emphasized that the launch of VDX will accelerate the commercialization of air taxis, offering safer, more efficient, and sustainable urban transport solutions.

Regulatory Authorities Praise Innovation

Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director-General of the GCAA, described the certification as a historic achievement for the UAE’s aviation sector, showcasing the nation’s leadership in fostering innovation while ensuring safety. He noted that the UAE is not only prepared for the future of aviation but is actively shaping the development of advanced air mobility, establishing new international standards.

The VDX vertiport is specifically designed for eVTOL aircraft, enabling vertical takeoff and landing without the need for traditional runways, significantly enhancing spatial efficiency. The GCAA’s certification confirms that the facility meets the safety and technical standards required for commercial operations, laying the foundation for the full deployment of Dubai’s Air Taxi Network. The RTA stated that the air taxi network will integrate with existing ground transportation systems to provide more convenient urban mobility options.

While VDX has been approved for operation, officials have not yet announced a specific timeline for its commercial launch or disclosed the eVTOL models or manufacturers that will operate at the facility. Skyports Infrastructure indicated that with certification now complete, the development of Dubai’s Air Taxi Network will accelerate, with further details to be released in the coming months.
