Australia’s first team to attempt a full lap of the country in an electric campervan recently faced a power depletion crisis near Burra, South Australia, just 200 meters from the nearest charging station, ultimately requiring a tow from the Royal Automobile Association (RAA). This incident not only serves as a significant case study for long-distance electric campervan travel but also provides practical insights into charging strategies and range management.

200-Meter Shortfall Leads to Tow Incident

Drivers Clive Attwater and his partner Anne had planned to charge at Morgan around July 19 before heading to the Burra charging station. However, Clive assessed that the remaining battery was sufficient to cover the final 2 kilometers and decided to skip the planned charging stop. Unexpectedly, they encountered headwinds, and their electric campervan, nicknamed 'Lucy,' came to a complete halt just 200 meters short of a hill crest, unable to coast to the charging station.

Clive promptly contacted the RAA for assistance, and a tow truck arrived within 40 minutes. In their post-incident account, the team admitted, 'This was a clear mistake; we failed to adhere to the 'Always Be Charging' principle.' Clive noted that even diesel vehicle drivers top up fuel at virtually every service station they pass, emphasizing that electric vehicle drivers should cultivate the habit of charging whenever possible. The RAA’s tow service received high praise from the team, described as 'absolutely amazing.'

Electric Campervan Range Performance Influenced by Multiple Factors

'Lucy,' converted from a Farizon SV cargo van, is the first electric campervan to attempt a full lap of Australia. Clive revealed that the vehicle’s real-world average range is 242 kilometers, though this varies between 170 and 346 kilometers depending on terrain, wind speed, temperature, and driving speed. To manage these variables, the team typically drove at speeds of 80 to 90 km/h, only increasing to 110 km/h when charging infrastructure was readily available, balancing travel time with energy efficiency.

Clive pointed out that while higher speeds save time, the increased energy consumption and charging time may not justify the trade-off. During their journey, the team observed that about half of the charging stations had other electric vehicles present, mostly in less remote areas with four-bay sites, and no significant queuing issues were reported. The only instance of a slightly reduced charging rate occurred when the vehicle’s battery was nearly depleted.

Promotional Significance Behind the Lap of Australia

This lap of Australia was initiated by Clive and his long-time partner Sue, aiming to promote the feasibility and challenges of electric travel. The pair previously attempted a similar journey in a Nissan Leaf in 2021 but were thwarted by COVID-19 restrictions. Clive also contributed to the development of Tasmania’s Electric Highways, helping to establish one of the country’s most robust fast-charging networks, which credited him as one of the key figures in ensuring Tasmania has 'about the best EV fast-charging network.'

The team emphasized that this journey not only demonstrates the potential of electric campervans but also aims to transparently share the practical challenges encountered, including the current state of charging infrastructure and areas for improvement. Clive noted that Australia is home to an estimated 75,000 to 100,000 'grey nomads'—retirees or semi-retirees who travel long-term in RVs or campervans—with up to 30,000 on the road at any given time. As electric campervans become more prevalent, the number of 'green nomads' is expected to grow, driving further development in charging infrastructure and campground planning.

The team has completed the leg from Hobart, Tasmania, to South Australia, and prior to this incident, the campervan had charged successfully at every station without equipment failures. Clive and Anne’s experience offers valuable real-world validation for long-distance electric campervan travel while serving as a reminder that charging strategies should be a top priority in route planning.
