The Frustration of 30-Amp Power: The Reality Behind Circuit Breaker Trips

Since 2019, Carolyn Fortuna has owned a modular vacation home in a rural seasonal community in Connecticut. Built in the 1960s, the home is equipped with only a 30-amp electrical service, limiting its maximum load to 3,600 watts (120 volts × 30 amps)—far below the demands of a modern household. Fortuna described that while running a refrigerator, television, lighting, and a small oven simultaneously is manageable, adding a coffee maker and an electric heater immediately trips the circuit breaker. To avoid frequent outages, she and her family developed a "shout-out power management" system, alerting each other when high-wattage appliances could be safely turned on.

Fortuna’s experience is not unique. Over one-third of Connecticut households still rely on heating oil or other petroleum products for heating, the fourth-highest rate in the U.S. Most modular home communities were built in the mid-20th century, and their outdated electrical designs have become a major barrier to full electrification. Fortuna noted that prolonged overloading of a 30-amp system can lead to wire overheating, voltage drops, and even damage to compressors and other electronic devices, with older homes built before 2010 facing higher risks.

Induction Stovetops and Heat Pumps: Electrification Attempts Within Limited Capacity

Due to the power constraints, Fortuna could not install a full four-burner electric stove or a large heat pump. Instead, she opted for a single-burner induction stovetop as an alternative. She found that induction cooking heats quickly and evenly, offering a far superior experience compared to traditional gas stoves. A survey revealed that 98% of induction stove users reported being satisfied or very satisfied, while only 41% of gas stove users expressed the same level of satisfaction. However, with Connecticut’s electricity prices ranking as the third-highest in the nation—trailing only Hawaii and California—she adopted an "on-demand heating" strategy, such as turning on the water heater half an hour in advance to save on electricity costs.

For heating, Fortuna replaced the propane heater in her Florida room with an electric heater in the summer of 2026, reducing her reliance on fossil fuels. She explained that this change aligned with her environmental values while also improving indoor air quality. However, due to the electrical limitations, she could not install a large heat pump and instead used a small electric heater as a transitional solution.

Solar Power and Policy Changes: Hope for Future Electrification

Fortuna is looking forward to Connecticut’s "portable solar" law, set to take effect on October 1, 2026. The law will allow homeowners to install solar panels on balconies or fences and plug them directly into household outlets, offsetting some of their grid electricity use. She plans to adopt portable solar panels once the law is in effect to further reduce her dependence on the grid. Until then, she continues to rely on time-shifted electricity use and small appliances to gradually achieve partial electrification.

While Connecticut summers are typically mild, the number of extreme heat days in 2026 has increased, catching homeowners off guard. Fortuna uses passive cooling strategies such as opening windows for ventilation, drawing blinds, and supplementing with a small oscillating fan. She noted that while she cannot install a large air conditioning unit, these measures have been sufficient in most situations.

A 2025 report by the nonprofit Civic Well highlighted that electrification upgrades for mobile or modular homes are often hindered by high costs. The report emphasized that policy support and technological innovation are key to advancing electrification. Fortuna’s case illustrates that while individual efforts can make progress, achieving true all-electric living will require breakthroughs in both policy and technology.
