Denza Z9S Unveiled with Record-Breaking Range
On August 4, BYD’s premium brand Denza officially unveiled the all-new Z9S all-electric sedan. The company claims that under China’s Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle (CLTC) standard, the top-tier model achieves a range of 1,100 kilometers, setting a new record for mass-produced electric vehicles. Li Hui, Denza’s general manager, stated at the launch event that the Z9S’s range is 'not meant to be remembered, but to be forgotten,' emphasizing that owners might overlook charging needs due to its extended range.
The Z9S comes standard with a 102.3-kilowatt-hour lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery pack, utilizing BYD’s second-generation Blade battery technology. Official data indicates the vehicle can charge from 10% to 70% in five minutes and from 10% to 97% in nine minutes. BYD asserts that this combination of ultra-long range and fast charging will render traditional gasoline vehicles 'almost irrelevant.'
Three Range Variants with Diverse Power Configurations
The Denza Z9S is offered in three range variants, with CLTC-rated ranges of 780 kilometers, 920 kilometers, and 1,100 kilometers. In terms of power, the base model features a single electric motor with a maximum output of 496 horsepower (370 kW), while the top-tier model is equipped with a tri-motor system delivering a total output of 1,193 horsepower (890 kW).
The vehicle incorporates several advanced technologies, including a roof-integrated LiDAR system, rear-wheel steering, air suspension, and BYD’s God’s Eye 5.0 assisted driving system. The interior design centers on a large touchscreen display, aligning with the Chinese market’s demand for intelligent cockpits. The Z9S is priced from 342,000 yuan (approximately $47,100) in China.
Experts Question Range Due to Testing Standard Differences
While the Denza Z9S’s range performance under the CLTC standard is impressive, experts point out that China’s CLTC standard is more lenient compared to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) or Europe’s WLTP standards, particularly favoring low-speed driving conditions. Estimates suggest that under the EPA standard, the Z9S’s range would be approximately 772 kilometers, falling short of the Lucid Air Grand Touring’s EPA-certified range of 512 miles (824 kilometers).
Furthermore, if the Lucid Air Grand Touring’s range were converted to the CLTC standard, it could reach 1,174 kilometers, surpassing the Z9S’s official figure. This implies that under stricter testing conditions, the Z9S’s real-world range may not match that of its competitors. Currently, no independent organization has verified the Z9S’s range performance, and real-world road test results remain to be seen.
Charging Infrastructure and Battery Durability Remain Key Concerns
While the Z9S’s fast-charging technology stands out, its compatibility with charging networks outside China remains unclear. The long-term durability and performance degradation of the second-generation Blade battery also require more real-world usage data for validation. The Z9S is currently available only in the Chinese market, with no official plans announced for overseas launches. International markets may see different range certification results compared to China’s official data.
Industry experts note that the real-world range of electric vehicles is influenced by various factors, including driving habits, road conditions, and climate. The Z9S’s range performance under high-speed driving or extreme weather conditions still requires further testing. For consumers, official range claims serve only as a reference, with actual usage experience being the decisive factor.
