Audi A2 e-tron Breaks Brand Efficiency Record
German automaker Audi has announced that its upcoming all-electric hatchback, the A2 e-tron, set to debut this fall, achieves a preliminary WLTP efficiency rating of 4.85 miles per kWh (equivalent to 12.8 kWh per 100 km) when equipped with the optional efficiency package. This makes it the most efficient vehicle Audi has ever produced. The achievement is attributed to comprehensive aerodynamic optimizations, which reduced the A2 e-tron’s drag coefficient to 0.24, the lowest among Audi’s compact models.
The model will be Audi’s most affordable new electric vehicle to date, with a starting price of €38,200 including VAT in Germany. The launch of the A2 e-tron underscores Audi’s focus on efficiency and cost control during its electric transition.
Aerodynamic Optimizations Reduce Drag
The A2 e-tron’s aerodynamic design incorporates several innovations, including an active air intake, air curtains, gap reducers, and gap breathers. Audi states that the active air intake remains closed during normal driving and at higher speeds to minimize drag, opening only during charging, rapid acceleration, or high temperatures to meet cooling demands for the battery and electronic systems. These optimizations enable the A2 e-tron to achieve its industry-leading drag coefficient of 0.24, providing a significant advantage over other compact models.
The optional efficiency package further reduces energy consumption, cutting power use by up to 0.9 kWh per 100 km (approximately 1.44 kWh per 100 miles) compared to the standard model. Audi emphasizes that these improvements not only enhance range but also contribute to longer battery life.
58 kWh LFP Battery and High-Efficiency Powertrain
The A2 e-tron comes standard with a 58 kWh (61 kWh gross) lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery pack, utilizing a cell-to-pack design that eliminates traditional modules to increase energy density. Audi has enhanced overall efficiency through refinements such as an optimized battery thermal management system, silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors, low-friction transmission oil, and thinner laminations in the electric motor.
The entry-level A2 e-tron features a 187 hp (140 kW) rear-mounted electric motor. According to previously published information on Audi’s German website, the model will eventually be offered in multiple power variants, including 167 hp (125 kW), 228 hp (170 kW), and 321 hp (240 kW) versions. The highest-range variant, equipped with a 79 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery pack, is expected to deliver up to 403 miles (649 km) of WLTP range, though Audi has not officially confirmed these specifications.
Bidirectional Charging and High-Efficiency Charging Strategy
The A2 e-tron supports both vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-home (V2H) bidirectional charging. In V2L mode, owners can use a household outlet in the trunk to power tools, appliances, or camping equipment at up to 2.3 kW. The V2H function allows the vehicle to supply power to an entire home, provided the residence is equipped with the necessary infrastructure.
Audi’s redesigned cooling strategy has improved home charging efficiency to 89.6%, reducing energy loss. These optimizations further enhance the practicality and convenience of the A2 e-tron in everyday use.
Revisiting the A2’s Legacy of Efficiency
The introduction of the A2 e-tron marks Audi’s return to the efficiency-driven design philosophy of the original A2, which debuted in the 2000s. While the original A2 was renowned for its innovative lightweight construction, the new A2 e-tron redefines Audi’s efficiency standards in the electric vehicle segment through advancements in aerodynamics, battery technology, and powertrain systems. Though pricing has only been announced for the German market, Audi has not disclosed whether the model will be available in other regions. However, its affordable positioning and high-efficiency performance are expected to have a significant impact on the European electric vehicle market.
