BMW has confirmed the iX4 will mark a pivotal shift in its Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) lineup, becoming the brand’s first model in the segment available exclusively as a fully electric vehicle. The iX4, set to succeed the internal combustion engine (ICE) X4, will begin production in November 2025 at BMW’s Debrecen plant in Hungary. The model is expected to make its global debut between September and October 2026, according to reports from U-Car.
End of the ICE X4 Era
BMW discontinued production of the ICE-powered X4 in 2025, concluding a decade-long run for the model. The original X4, introduced in 2014, was based on the third-generation X3 and featured a distinctive sloping roofline that defined the SAC segment. The second-generation X4, launched in 2018 and refreshed in June 2021, retained this design language but will now be replaced entirely by the iX4. Unlike the iX3 and iX5, which coexist with their ICE counterparts, the iX4 will be offered only as a fully electric vehicle, reflecting BMW’s strategic focus on electrification in the coupe-SUV segment.
The iX4, internally designated as NA7, will utilize BMW’s next-generation 800V Neue Klasse electric platform. This architecture, shared with the iX3, is designed to enhance performance, efficiency, and charging speeds. The decision to produce the iX4 exclusively as an electric model underscores BMW’s confidence in the market’s transition toward fully electric luxury vehicles, particularly in segments where design and driving dynamics are prioritized.
Design and Aerodynamics
Camouflaged test vehicles of the iX4 reveal a design that retains the core aesthetic of the X4 lineage while incorporating modern electric vehicle (EV) elements. The front fascia features a compact vertical kidney grille flanked by slim, four-eye LED headlights, a signature BMW design cue. The iX4’s coupe-like silhouette, characterized by a steeply sloped roofline and hidden door handles, distinguishes it from the more upright iX3. The rear design draws inspiration from the current X6, with a pronounced ducktail spoiler and muscular rear haunches that emphasize its sporty stance.
External media reports suggest the iX4 may achieve a drag coefficient lower than the iX3’s 0.24, which would improve aerodynamic efficiency and potentially extend range. While the iX4 is expected to retain the iX3’s 2,898mm wheelbase, its overall body length may be slightly shorter than the iX3’s 4,783mm. These adjustments could enhance agility without compromising interior space, a key consideration for the SAC segment.
Interior and Technology
The iX4’s interior is anticipated to align closely with the iX3’s cabin, featuring BMW’s latest Operating System X. This system integrates a hexagonal central touchscreen, a fully digital instrument cluster, and a 3D head-up display, creating an immersive and intuitive user experience. The Panoramic iDrive interface, introduced with the iX3, is expected to return, offering advanced connectivity and driver-assistance features.
