Strong Demand in Taiwan Market as iX3 Quota Sells Out
BMW’s next-generation all-electric iX3 SUV officially launched in Taiwan on July 20, marking the first SUV model under the Neue Klasse electric vehicle architecture. With only 900 units allocated for the Taiwanese market this year, pre-orders have already exceeded 1,000, reflecting strong consumer interest in the all-electric SUV. BMW Taiwan has not issued an official statement regarding adjustments to the quota or future supply plans.
Panoramic Vision System Revolutionizes Traditional Instrument Design
The iX3’s most significant innovation is the debut of the Panoramic Vision full-domain display system. Positioned along the lower edge of the windshield, this system employs a special glass coating technology that uses optical reflection to create a floating display directly in the driver’s forward line of sight. Unlike traditional instrument clusters, this system completely eliminates obstruction by the steering wheel while retaining all critical driving information.
The Panoramic Vision system’s core functions include fixed displays for speed, gear position, battery level, warning lights, and driving range. On the right side of the driver’s field of vision, the system offers six customizable fields that can display over a dozen types of information, including music details, date and time, weather conditions, outside temperature, wheel angle, motor speed, battery temperature, and air quality. This design allows drivers to personalize displayed content according to their needs while keeping their eyes on the road ahead.
BMW states that the system’s advantage lies in its more intuitive information presentation, which does not interfere with the driver’s line of sight. Compared to traditional head-up displays, Panoramic Vision offers a broader display range and greater information capacity while avoiding the issue of instrument clusters being obscured by the steering wheel. However, some observers note that the design of six customizable fields may lead to information overload and suggest integrating some auxiliary information into the central touchscreen.
17.9-Inch Floating Central Touchscreen Redefines Human-Machine Interface
The iX3’s central console features a 17.9-inch floating touchscreen with precisely angled edges that align perfectly with the steering wheel’s position. This design ensures an unobstructed view from the driver’s seat while concentrating primary control functions on the left half of the screen for easy single-handed operation. The right side of the screen is primarily used for navigation display and supports CarPlay functionality.
A vehicle icon is located on the left slanted edge of the screen; tapping it reveals the car’s overall status and currently supports control of the rear trunk and charging port. BMW describes this design as embodying a “driver-centric” philosophy, consolidating all key functions within the driver’s easy reach. However, some features, such as front trunk control, have not yet been integrated and may require future software updates.
The phone dock beneath the central touchscreen is angled at approximately 60 degrees, allowing drivers to view their phone screens without lowering their heads. This design not only enhances convenience but also adheres to ergonomic principles, reducing neck strain while driving.
Multi-Screen Design Sparks Discussion on the Future of Driving
The iX3’s interior integrates the Panoramic Vision system, a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, phone display, and an optional head-up display, making it one of the production vehicles with the highest number of screens on the market. While this multi-screen design enhances technological appeal, it has also sparked debate about the necessity of such information. As autonomous driving technology advances, drivers’ need for vehicle information may gradually decrease, raising questions about the continued value of multi-screen designs in the industry.
BMW indicates that the Panoramic Vision system will become a core technology for the Neue Klasse generation and may be extended to other models in the future. The iX3’s multi-screen design not only showcases BMW’s innovation in human-machine interfaces but also sets a new benchmark for the luxury electric vehicle market. However, striking a balance between information richness and driver focus will remain a long-term challenge for automakers.
