BMW iX3 Hits 50,000 Units in Nine Months, Setting New Plant Record as Orders Near 100,000, Forcing Production Expansion

BMW’s new plant in Debrecen, Hungary, produced 50,000 iX3 electric SUVs in just nine months, marking the fastest production ramp-up for a newly opened BMW facility. With global orders approaching 100,000, BMW has advanced a second production shift and plans to relocate North American production to Mexico. The iX3, featuring an 800-volt architecture and 434 miles of range, has become a top choice in European and U.S. markets.

Debrecen Plant Sets Fastest Production Ramp-Up Record

BMW’s new plant in Debrecen, Hungary, produced its 50,000th iX3 electric SUV by the end of July 2026, just nine months after production began, setting a record for the fastest production ramp-up at a newly opened BMW facility. BMW attributed this achievement to strong global demand for the iX3, with total orders approaching 100,000, far exceeding initial expectations.

The Debrecen plant started iX3 production in October 2025, with an initial annual capacity of around 50,000 units. However, due to rapidly growing orders, BMW advanced the launch of a second production shift to February 2026 to meet market demand. BMW stated that the early introduction of the second shift was a key factor in reaching the 50,000-unit milestone in such a short time.

Strong Sales in Europe and U.S., One-Third of German Buyers New to BMW

The iX3 has performed exceptionally well in the German market. BMW revealed that within six weeks of opening orders in October 2025, the model received over 3,000 orders in Germany, briefly outselling the combustion-powered X3 to become the best-selling BMW model in the country. BMW further noted that around one-third of German buyers were new to the brand, with some customers placing orders without a test drive.

In other European markets, the iX3 has also gained popularity. In April 2026, the iX3 achieved 10,299 deliveries in Europe, just behind its first month on sale, and became the best-selling electric vehicle in its class that month. BMW stated that iX3 orders accounted for roughly one-third of its total electric vehicle orders in Europe, signaling strong market acceptance of the Neue Klasse architecture.

In the U.S. market, the iX3 is priced at $61,500 (plus a $1,350 destination fee), closely aligning with the price of the combustion-powered X3, which has further boosted sales. BMW plans to shift North American iX3 production to its San Luis Potosi plant in Mexico starting in 2027 to enhance supply chain efficiency.

800-Volt Architecture and 434 Miles of Range Enhance Competitiveness

The iX3 features an 800-volt architecture, supporting up to 400 kW fast charging and delivering an EPA-certified range of 434 miles (approximately 698 kilometers), making it the first mass-produced BMW model to adopt the Neue Klasse architecture. Internal BMW assessments indicate that the iX3 outperforms previous BMW electric models in performance, comfort, and driving enjoyment, fulfilling the technological leap promised by the Neue Klasse platform.

The iX3 competes with models such as the Porsche Cayenne Electric, Volvo EX60, and several Mercedes-Benz electric vehicles, all of which represent a new generation of premium electric vehicles with higher charging efficiency and extended range. BMW plans to introduce additional Neue Klasse models, including the i3 sedan and iX5 SUV, to further expand the platform’s market influence.

China Market Supplied by Shenyang Plant, Long-Wheelbase Version Exported to Southeast Asia

The iX3 for the Chinese market is produced at BMW’s Shenyang plant, featuring a long-wheelbase design. In addition to supplying the domestic market, the model is exported to Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and India. The Debrecen plant currently serves European and U.S. markets, but with North American production shifting to Mexico, future capacity allocation will become more flexible.

BMW stated that the iX3’s success has laid a strong foundation for the Neue Klasse lineup, though the market performance of upcoming models like the i3 and iX5 remains to be seen. As global competition in the electric vehicle market intensifies, BMW will continue to optimize production capacity and supply chains to meet growing demand.
