Significant Fuel Cost Reductions Drive Strong Incentives for Fleet Electrification
Jet Charge, an Australian electric vehicle charging equipment provider, has released a new analysis showing that transitioning heavy fleets to electric vehicles (EVs) can deliver substantial fuel cost savings for businesses. For a large fleet of 100 heavy vehicles, annual diesel expenditure reaches AUD 5.8 million at a price of AUD 1.91 per litre. By switching entirely to electric vehicles with depot charging, fuel costs could drop to approximately AUD 1.3 million, saving AUD 4.5 million annually—a reduction of 77%.
Tim Washington, Co-Founder and CEO of Jet Charge, stated that the fuel cost savings from commercial fleet electrification at current diesel prices are "transformational." He emphasized that the freight industry’s long-term dependence on diesel directly drives up the prices of goods. Electrification not only reduces business operating costs but also serves as a key strategy to alleviate supply chain price volatility, with significant implications for consumers.
IKEA’s Electrification Transition Yields Remarkable Results, Zero-Emission Deliveries Surge
The cost benefits of electric fleets are demonstrated by furniture retailer IKEA’s real-world case. Over the past three years, IKEA invested AUD 4.5 million to build a national charging network across seven sites in Australia, successfully increasing its zero-emission delivery share from 5% to 83%. This investment not only reduced fuel expenses but also enhanced the company’s environmental image.
Washington noted that as businesses increasingly recognize the advantages of electrification, demand for heavy truck charging and maintenance will grow rapidly. He added that the challenge for businesses has shifted from "whether to electrify" to "whether charging infrastructure can keep pace with vehicle deployment."
Infrastructure and Workforce Bottlenecks Hinder Transition
A report by the New South Wales (NSW) parliamentary standing committee on electric vehicle infrastructure has exposed systemic challenges facing fleet electrification. The report highlights that Distribution Network Service Providers (DNSPs) are inefficient in processing charging infrastructure connections and power upgrades, with widely varying fee structures posing a major barrier to business transitions. Additionally, a severe shortage of skilled labor exists, including a lack of electricians trained in EV charger installation and technicians with expertise in electric heavy truck maintenance.
Experts warn that these bottlenecks could delay charging infrastructure deployment or result in untimely repairs when vehicles break down, potentially slowing the overall transition. Jet Charge’s analysis suggests that as businesses become more aware of the benefits of electrification, demand for heavy truck charging and maintenance will surge, and existing infrastructure and workforce capacity may struggle to meet the needs.
While fleet electrification offers multiple benefits for Australia’s transport sector, including reduced fuel costs and more stable energy supply, the report stresses that related infrastructure and workforce training must be accelerated. Currently, there is no official up-to-date data on the progress or adoption rate of electric heavy fleets in Australia, but Jet Charge’s analysis provides clear cost incentives for the industry. With diesel prices remaining high, whether businesses can overcome infrastructure and workforce challenges will be a decisive factor in the success of electrification efforts.
