Record Highs in EV Fleet and Sales Data
Australia’s electric vehicle market continues to expand, with the latest data from the Electric Vehicle Council (EVC) showing that the national EV fleet reached 650,000 vehicles by July 2026, representing approximately 3% of the total vehicle fleet. In July 2026, Australia sold 23,510 battery electric vehicles (BEVs), accounting for 22.3% of total monthly sales, a marked increase from the same period last year. Including 10,359 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), total plug-in sales for the month reached 33,869, reflecting growing consumer acceptance of electric vehicles.
EVC CEO Julie Delvecchio stated on August 7 that BEVs accounted for 17.7% of total sales year-to-date in 2026, while PHEV share rose from 4.2% last year to 9%. She noted that the EV market is diversifying, with vehicle options spanning various price points and use cases. Delvecchio highlighted that consumers can save approximately AUD 3,000 annually on fuel and maintenance costs, a key factor driving adoption. She emphasized that EV sales have grown significantly compared to last year, with market choices expanding across all vehicle types and price ranges.
The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) reported that EVs accounted for 21.7% of July sales, slightly below the EVC’s 22.3% figure. The discrepancy arises because the FCAI includes heavy commercial vehicles in its calculations, while the EVC excludes them. EVC data indicated that while BEV sales share in July 2026 was slightly lower than in June, the overall trend remains strong, signaling that the EV market has entered a phase of steady growth.
Traditional Automakers Accelerate Electrification with Strong Results
Volvo Car Australia reported that fully electric vehicles accounted for 42% of its year-to-date sales in 2026 and 65% in July alone, setting a new record for the brand in Australia. Stephen Connor, Managing Director of Volvo Car Australia, stated that this reflects growing consumer confidence in electric mobility and Volvo’s expanding EV product lineup. He emphasized that as charging infrastructure becomes more widespread and vehicle options increase, electric vehicles are becoming the preferred choice for more consumers.
